Reader, writer, dreamer, scientist. She/her. everywhere else @etoiline except twitch: starryjen. Currently immersed in writing fanfic because real life isn't so pretty right now. Many archived posts from the other social media. #stl
When I was a baby writer, I planned *everything*. But I still never really got the oomph to get to the end. Now I'm pretty much solely a discovery writer, which means I can get pretty wordy, but it also means I've developed a sense of when I come upon an ending (such an exciting feeling!)
#WritingCommunity, how do folks tackle their first draft? Do you tend to plot everything out, do you discover things as you go along, or do you like to do a mix?

For right now, I am experimenting with the art of doing 10k drafts by means of discovery writing before I outline.

Jane Austen used 'however' at the beginning of a sentence, and so can you.

Apropos to a post I'm not going to quote: no, you are not fucking obliged to battle the fucking right on fucking social media, or go to where they are. Why make yourself miserable shouting at bots (who don't care) or trolls (who get off on your misery). Make your fucking social media enjoyable, FFS.

Sometimes a family is a kid and his droid and his grumpy uncle and sort of ex-Jedi master and space witch friend (now more than friend) and mercenary ex-friend and a newly added small child. And they live in a luxury yacht.

The reason a sex scene is like an action scene is because it is literally an action scene.

We understand that two bodies meeting to punch each other is an action scene. Two bodies meeting intimately is also an action scene.

I miss the farmhouse
where my grandparents lived once
now just memories.

tall sycamore trees
turned golden in hazy fall
chopped down years ago.

spent so much time there
now just nostalgia saying
it was quiet then.

This is the first year in 20+ years that I haven't written 50k words in November (I wrote 30k). There was no official event to participate in, hardly any responsibilities for me as an organizer, so I didn't feel the need to burn myself out on words this month.

The first known use of 'wicked' was in the 13th century.
We hope everyone flies free this weekend.

BTW, the name Elphaba is a reference to "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" author L. Frank Baum.

Art is an act of hope. Writing is an act of rebellion. The world will always need more stories--from real human beings, not bullshit plagiarism machines. Every book is a love story from the author, and every reader is fighting the war against cruelty, ignorance, and hopelessness. We are fighting.

Horseshoe Crab Blood Has Long Helped Us Make Safe Medicines. Now, Alternatives That Spare the Ancient Creatures Might Be Breaking Through
An enzyme in the blue blood has been key to testing vaccines since the 1980s, raising concerns for the crabs’ population. But regulatory approval and new data are signaling the tide may be turning

Language fun (it's always the Normans) 🧵
-cease and desist
-null and void
-aid and abet
-free and clear
-ways and means

Why is law stuff like this always two words?

These are called ‘legal doublets’ and we can once again blame the Normans.

If you have ‘dibs’ on something, you claim or declare rights to that thing before anyone else.

‘Dibs’ comes from an old children's game called ‘dibstones,’ which resembled the game of jacks.
