This keeps happening and it’s heartbreaking. Victoria Harbour is a top toxic hotspot. Victoria welcomes over 300 cruise ships every year.

Please watch the video in part two of my post below to understand how toxic pollution is killing orcas. #savethewhales #SRKW #yyj #yyjpoli

Yes, it is.

An EPA reviewed study shows for every hour a cruise ship is at dock, the emissions are equivalent to 3441 semi-trucks idling. In 2025, Victoria had 311 cruise ship calls totalling 2167 hours at dock. Over 7 MILLION hours of GHGs, toxic ultrafine airborne particles, NOx & SOx. #yyj #climatecrisis

Victoria's 2025 cruise season is over. By the numbers: 311 ship calls. 2167 hours of emissions. 81% regulatory stops saving cruise lines est. US$822 Million in fines avoided. Est.47% night calls under 5 hours. 159 ship days=no fully pedestrianized Gov't Street. May 1-Sep 30: just 14 no-ship days.

Victoria's cruise season grinds to a close tonight with the arrival of NCL Encore, here for its 26th fine-dodging pit stop & garbage run. Typically arriving after 7pm and staying for less than 5 hours, it contributed little to Victoria's economy but saved NCL about US$103 Million in fines avoided.

Tonight, for the 27th & final time this season, Victoria hosts NCL Bliss, here for a pit stop. In 2025, these stops, averaging less that 5 hours, saved Norwegian Cruise Lines over USD $114 million in fines avoided. Ship likely unloaded a week's worth of Alaska-route garbage. That's undisclosed.

Unfortunately, after pressure from the USA as well as the oil producing countries led by Saudi Arabia, the country members declined to bring the 'Net Zero Framework' to a vote. Instead the session was adjourned with the intention to bring it back in one year.

This is obviously disappointing
Today is the final and historic vote at the International Maritime Organisation on the #NetZeroFramework, which constitutes the world’s first attempt at a mandatory international regulation on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from any industrial sector.

My prediction is that it will be adopted

Victoria Marathon today, 15,000 runners in a world-ranked event. Waterfront road closed all day, local streets shut/jammed but it’s a great event that we all love. At 7am, some idiot parked Venture cruise ship right in the middle of this. No bus access, roads belong to runners. Cruise lines hate us.

Nothing says Thanksgiving in Victoria like a couple of cruise ships here to enjoy what's shaping up to be a wet weekend. Today we host Noordam, and tonight it's the 26th straight Saturday night visit from Encore. Between them they average a D grade for their environmental practices.

Tonight Victoria hosts Bliss and Spirit. Both are pitstops to comply with an American law. So, not much in it for us. Bliss is on the SEA-Alaska run. Spirit is on a SEA-Hawaii cruise. Foreign stop required. Because nothing says Hawaiian cruise like a 6 hour stop in Canada in October.
