If you’re seeing THE MASTERMIND, guess what? I wrote a bit about it in relation to ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER!

My strongest book-related belief is that the paperback should come first and then the hardback after for people who want a fancy edition.
I’m so happy to see KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN added to @criterion.bsky.social. William Hurt won an Oscar for his performance, which he even admitted deeply relies on Raúl Juliá’s brilliance. This movie makes me wonder what else we could have gotten had Juliá not left us so soon.

Happy Birthday to Mira Nair, a filmmaker who has always promoted the importance of love and community to save lives, and is so good at highlighting immigrant experiences. I’ll be leading a class discussing some of her work starting next week! cinejourneys.com/the-cinema-o...

D'Angelo speaking out about the physical and emotional burden of maintaining a nearly unobtainable physique and sexy image as a Black male artist should be taught in labor studies. It absolutely impacted how I analyze pop culture.

D’Angelo, along with his peers of music, taught me so much. His music was beyond generation or genre to me. When I think of *that scene* in SINNERS, D was the first artist it reminded me of. A rare, honest talent whose music gave life. RIP ❤️

The cover for this week’s issue is “Cannonball,” by Harry Bliss. See what’s inside: https://newyorkermag.visitlink.me/NcQOF2
Actually very shocked about Diane Keaton. She cemented herself so deeply into film that I never once even thought she’d be gone!
35 movies later, I had a great time at #NYFF63. It was great to see so many friends, make new ones, and watch good movies. Here’s to next year!

I'm too fucking tired to debunk every stupid thing that Ryan Murphy said about Christine Jorgensen or how the public response to Ed Gein was catastrophic to the the perception of trans people so I'll just point to my book. We covered all of it.

At times, I love New York movie audiences more than any audiences in the world, and one of those moments came today, when the first appearance of Thelma Schoonmaker in the documentary received a huge round of entrance applause from the crowd in Alice Tully Hall. These are my kind of people.
