Niche post for critics and movie-awards-season nerds: Don't sleep on The Plague, a superb, excruciatingly tense American debut film--not horror, but in its way terrifying--about being a 12- or 13-year-old boy among other 12- or 13-year-old boys. Opens next month; it's haunted me since I saw it.

I do think that this track is distracting, but I also think the audience for this film probably hasn’t heard it in the many MANY other TV/Movies that have used it.

I just don’t understand why you hire Max Richter to do your soundtrack and then ask him to reuse a piece of his music.
I am not reviewing Hamnet, so I expanded my thoughts on it in my Letterboxd review.

Basically, I think Chloe Zhao has an unseemly, voyeuristic gaze, and her use of Max Richter's "On the Nature of Delight" is cynical, a misguided attempt at edging her audience toward ALL THE FEELS.
A ★★ review of Hamnet (2025)
Now that Hamnet is opening in theaters and I do not plan to review the film, I wanted to expand a little on my thoughts here. Parts of Hamnet are moving, like the tentative nature of Agnes and William...

First episode quick thoughts: so many characters. Music is great and as expected the show drips style. Might need a notebook to keep track of it all though.
My stream stopped while watching Blossoms Shanghai. Hopefully a lot of people are checking it out, but also I want to watch it.

I can understand people not liking, even strongly disliking TRON: ARES (I dug it!) but even they will surely admit the score is a banger.

Critics' Choice "Shortlist" for Best Score. There's really nothing short about this list, but what do you think is missing? Also, I wonder if Testament of Ann Lee will miss out because it's a variation of previous music.

So this post led me to look for the soundtrack (since its also very good), but what I found on Amazon was NOT GREAT.

Ahead of the new Knives Out movie launching on Netflix on Wednesday, I wanted to reshare my review of it from TIFF. Sorry to be a bummer, but I didn't really love it all that much!

Due to the holiday, this week's Apple shows, Pluribus included, will drop two days earlier than usual.

("Wednesday" technically means "9 p.m. Eastern on Tuesday." I have no idea why Apple sticks to this fiction regarding when episodes are released.)

I'm shocked that FATHER MOTHER SISTER BROTHER, a movie that won the Golden Lion at Venice, has all but disappeared. I just got an email saying that it will have a theatrical engagement before the year's end, but it had previously dropped off my radar entirely.
