We still have a few places left for our Volunteer Day this Sunday. We will be creating new water vole habitat as well as enhancing the existing wetland scrapes and marginal wetland areas – fun and muddy work so old clothes and wellies recommended. Please register using the link in the comments.
The findings include this interesting plot that shows the total number of people seen in each of 48 paths and open spaces along the way.
This data indicate the relative use and popularity of each area and the ratio of men to women gives an insight in to how safe people perceive the spaces to be.
In June we led a three part walk along the Crane Valley Trail - almost 30 miles from the source to the Thames. The report on the @cvp-cranevalley.bsky.social website records the findings of these walks.
The main phase of the Mereway river restoration project is almost complete – concrete removed; bank re-shaped; gravel, rock-roll and coir added. The site will be fenced off over the winter before volunteers plant in the spring. We’re very excited to see how this site develops!
What a shame this is!
Merton Council have informed us that on Friday 17 October two trees, an alder and a tree of heaven, will be felled. The trees are in the children's play area. One is dead and the other is infected with a fungus. The trees cannot be safely retained.

We achieved a lot, including maintenance of benches, dead hedge building, vegetation clearance and over 300kg of litter!
We were blessed with lovely weather, but hindered a little by thousands of (very well behaved) Harlequins fans heading to The Stoop! The plus side of course was that plenty of folk got to see what we do and many stopped to chat along the way.
Volunteer Sunday season is back with a great session last Sunday.

This season a member of @tcvnational.bsky.social is helping with organising & running the day in the absence of a volunteer coordinator. We’re looking for someone to help longer term, so please get in touch via [email protected]
Great to see this underwater clip - large shoals of minnows, young dace and roach from the Tidal Crane next to Northcote Nature Reserve. Investigations led by NNR’s Astronaut Kawada with Friends of NNR, FORCE and ZSL revealing the importance of the Tidal Crane as a fish habitat.
The Comtois horses yesterday mowing the Crane Park meadows. They’re taking the day off today but will return tomorrow to do the baling. You’re welcome to watch them - bring a pair of gloves and you can help shift the bales! #flowers #insects #nature
What a wonderful idea. Sharing to our network in case helpful to anyone.
The Boring Fund will be open for applications in November.

If your small UK charity needs (up to) £200 to cover something boring like insurance or web hosting, take a look.

They welcome donations too.
The Boring Fund - Open Collective
We support small non-profit organisations (UK) by only funding the really boring (but essential) stuff like insurance, accountancy or admin

The horses will be back to cut the meadows on Wednesday and Thursday this week. This twice yearly activity is helping to transform the five Crane Park meadows in to flower and insect rich habitats #flowers #insects
There is still time!

We’re working with The Borough of Richmond and @tcvnational.bsky.social to create a small nature reserve opposite the river restoration site by Craneford Field in Twickenham. TCV will be there on 17th & 18th September to scythe the meadow along with other improvement works – all welcome to join them
Richmond Council is running a survey to find out what young people would like to see in their parks and open spaces. They are very keen to get lots of feedback so please share with any relevant groups and individuals

New dates!!! We are delighted to announce the dates of our popular Senior Lunches for the rest of 2025 and the start of 2026.
Wonderful snaps of a lovely river - and what a handsome (or pretty!) heron. People like different sections. Further up towards LHR, there are few people and more wildlife. But not as easy to access from Richmond!
@friendsrivcrane.bsky.social Lovely walk around #cranepark this morning. Heard many, saw few but there was a very shy grey heron @everyheron.bsky.social #Birds #Herons #Nikonphotography
This looks fabulous - we will certainly be coming along.
If you are local, one (very talented) RTFoE member has a free exhibition of art inspired by the #RiverCrane www.nickirolls.com/news in Richmond this month. Do pop in and say 'Hi' if you are in town.
