I try to tag my editors in my social posts about pieces, but I do want to shout out two of my former editors. @halophoenix.bsky.social gave me my first professional commission and was a rare champion of accessibility reporting – alongside Christian Donlan, former features editor at Eurogamer. 1/8
By the way, it's National Editor Appreciation Day.

Nobody ever reads a great article and thinks, "Dang, that was some tight editing." But editing is a big part of how it got to be great.

So writers, if you've ever worked with a good editor, shout 'em out.

Slightly late to the party, but I reviewed @necrosoftgames.com's Demonschool for The Verge; a colourful take on tactical combat that builds its own identity from a mountain of inspirations and that I genuinely loved. Thanks to @andrewrweb.bsky.social for letting me.
Rough edges are smoothed out by colorful characters, fun side content, and an interesting take on tactical combat.
Demonschool channels Buffy and Persona for delightfully demonic RPG action

Man, there are a lot of pieces that were published this past week that make me even more furious than usual that so many people who are dedicated to telling meaningful stories are unemployed or scrambling to pitch while...all that gets published, amplified, paid for, and inflicted on readers.

Appeasing the far-right gives the broader public the impression that their narrative is true. There is no way to stem support for Reform by endorsing their policies. Either you are fighting against them or you are, regardless of how you see yourself, fighting for them.

Some abled parents of disabled people are the most violent ableists. They use their children as tools to demonstrate their heroism in shouldering the burden of taking care of a disabled person, think they’re incapable of ableism, and say the experience of a caretaker is the same as being disabled.

Hopped back on board the Stuart Gordon train (choo choo) to mark 30 years since Castle Freak for @inverse.com and @htranbui.bsky.social. A hidden gothic horror gem that becomes even more watchable within current horror trends than it was in 1995. With input from Jeffrey Combs.
30 Years Ago, An Overlooked Gothic Horror Was Ahead Of Its Time
With its character-driven horror, 1995’s 'Castle Freak' is more at home with the elevated horror of today than the direct-to-video nasties it released alongside.

After years of being incensed by people calling shows "the next Squid Game" just because they're South Korean, I'm also back in @thedailybeast.bsky.social to talk about the next Squid Game, because it literally is Squid Game – albeit in 19th century Japan – and yet also somehow 10x better.
This Netflix Series Will Be Even Bigger Than 'Squid Game'
Forget all the previous headlines promising series that are “The Next ‘Squid Game.’” New series “Last Samurai Standing” doesn’t just fit the bill—it’s even better.

A big one for me. Even before moving into journalism, I was trying to work out how to write about Reply 1988. Now, 10 years after its release, I'm in the BBC talking to the people behind it about how it remains one of *the* great televisual experiences and how it changed South Korean television
'Everyone can relate to it': How 2015 TV masterpiece Reply 1988 sparked the Korean drama boom
A decade ago, Reply 1988 launched. An emotional and nostalgic show about life in 1980s Seoul, it paved the way for other Korean global hits like Squid Game.

A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.
