Pumpkin pie and decaf coffee as a bedtime snack, enough time having elapsed since the turkey, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, roasted [potatoes, onions, parsnips, squash], sauteed brussels sprouts, frozen [peas, corn carrots] for the little ones and two kinds of dinner rolls. Yum!

Did you know the first thanksgiving celebrated by Europeans in North America happened in Canada?
Or that the Indigenous celebrated autumn harvests long before Europeans arrived?
Why do we celebrate Thanksgiving a month earlier than the United States?
This is the story.

🧵1/10
A festive Thanksgiving dinner table featuring a roasted turkey as the centerpiece, surrounded by an array of dishes including green beans, stuffing, sliced ham, and a pumpkin pie. The table is decorated with pumpkins, sunflowers, candles, and autumnal flowers, with wine glasses and plates set for a meal.

I think about all the people who have worked so hard to protect darkness. The Jackson Hole airport replacing its runway lights. The bike path in Singapore that has no illumination so that wildlife can migrate. And then some tech bro can ruin it for everyone.

In the 70s boys were allowed/expected to wear colours. Now, like adult men, they are in a state of war readiness with khaki, grey and blue.

Counting your blessings. My brothers. Just worked through the final stuff so my parents house can be cleared and sold. V complex. Yet no rows. An amazing team. No notes.

Supported by three amazing women.
Cheerful picture of three boys in seventies clothes on an outdoor staircase, arranged with oldest/tallest on the lower steps and youngest on the higher. Looking at camera. big lapels, extraordinary flares, long hair the lot. Biggest boy is in shadeds of purples, the middle boy is red with a white short, the smallest in blues. A tribute to seventies fashion

Congrats to the Mariners on winning the Battle of the Somme of baseball games. I think the Jays will have a tougher time against them because they will not be fueled by pure liquid Yankee hatred. Mariners are downright likeable.

As a fashion historian, I will die on this hill: the point of having blue hair and nose rings (or spiky nails or stripper heels or tattoos or an all-black wardrobe) is not to look pretty or cool. It's to look (and feel) powerful--something many young American women crave right now. And it's working.

If you accidentally post AI slop and are told “hey that’s AI” the correct answer is to go “aw shit I didn’t know” and delete it. Not “oh oops oh well, watcha gonna do” and keep it up because it’s giving you engagement. Stop it.

Can you think of a single movie in which there is a video from the government denouncing its political opponents playing on a loop in public spaces in which that government was the good guy?

A family member likes cream in her tea. When she orders tea with cream and sugar they repeat back "tea with milk and sugar" and she is "no, cream and sugar" and they are "two milks?" and it goes on for a while until they understand she means actual cream.

Canada’s continued lack of progress on strong AI & data regulation leaves its sovereigny vulnerable.

Article expert: “The 2018 CLOUD Act gives the American government the authority to access data from anywhere so long as it's maintained in a server owned by a U.S. company. Canada and the U.S. have been negotiating a bilateral agreement on the CLOUD Act for three years, but none exists yet.
A huge chunk of cloud storage servers and data centres in Canada is owned by companies like Microsoft, Amazon and Google, according to Beaumier - meaning that Canadian data, even if processed on Canadian soil, is ultimately being governed by the United States.”

Things that are cash grabs: Ford selling 99 year lease of public park (Ontario Place) to private company; successive governments taking taxpayer money earmarked for health and education and giving it to private companies. Things that are not cash grabs: fines for breaking the law.

Canadians are ambidextrous measurers.

😊

#Canada
Americans: I use miles and pounds
Europeans: I use kilometres and kilograms
Canadians: [snorting a line of assorted measuring systems] I'm 5'8, I weigh 150lbs, horses weigh 1000kgs, my house is an hour away and I drive 80 km/h to get there, I need a cup of flour and 1L of milk

People think the first thing Gutenberg printed was the Bible. This is false. The first things he printed were a political prophecy, propaganda about the Turks’ threat to Christendom, & a popular school text. If you want a parallel to AI, that’s it: making $ from conspiracies, racism, & school slop.
