Senate Democrats are the only group of people in America that could look at the election results from *less than a week ago* and conclude, “Ah, what the people want now is for us to roll over and show our bellies to the reactionary creeps”

One of two things is true:
1. Chuck Schumer genuinely felt this is a bad deal, so he voted against it, but he couldn't keep Senate Dems in line because he's a lackluster leader.
OR
2. Chuck Schumer orchestrated the shutdown deal w/ retiring Dems because he's a bad strategist and got rattled.

Trump is 30 points underwater. Dems swept the special elections. People know the GOP is responsible for the shutdown. So the Dem Senators pulled out their big guns... and shot themselves in the foot.

weirdly honest messaging from the breakaway mod/institutionalist leaders who blew up the party strategy
they're explicitly giving up. "It wasn't working so we quit" that's the message

81% of the Democratic base in a poll last week said Congress should “refuse to approve a budget unless it includes extending these tax credits, even if it means the government remains shut down.” But even 81% of the Dem base is not enough to get all Senate Democrats on board. #Pathetic

what’s remarkable about this is that there are zero winners at all, one of the biggest lose-lose deals I can remember
the Dem cavers will catch incandescent shit for it
the rest of the Dems will catch collateral fury
the big R win is… jacking everyone’s health care costs ahead of midterms

Yesterday, Chuck Schumer and his fellow cowards showed once again that our politicians do not serve the people; they serve their donors and themselves. This political system is broken and the leadership is out of touch. If Schumer is not immediately replaced, Dems should lose any trust that remains.

The coordinated nature of this—none are facing voters in 2026—means that either Schumer approved it or failed in his job as Senate Majority Leader to stop it.
Dems voting "no" get zero credit until they demand a change in leadership. Schumer out as Leader, Durbin out as Whip.

If the Democrats aren’t going to fight for the bare minimum for you, then we need to aim for the moon and the stars and go for what we really want. Universal healthcare. Universal basic income. Childcare. Free university education or free trade school.
Democrats won't create the lasting change or tap into the rage of the majority with Schumer and Jeffries in the lead. Centrists won't get it done, no matter how the establishment wills it. The country has radically shifted. The last 10 years is your evidence.

Hassan: With the government reopening shortly, Republicans now finally have to come to the table. Or make no mistake, Americans will remember who stood in the way.

Compete overhaul. Nothing should be left standing.
The original Dem demands were:
1) Permanent ACA subsidies
2) Medicaid funding restored
3) No more blank checks for the regime (rescission)
They dropped Medicaid immediately. Went silent on rescission. Cut back to 1 year of subsidies on Friday. And surrendered today.

Democrats put health care subsidies in the foreground while No Kings measures to restore power of the purse stayed in the background. They then got nothing on health care, while of course letting the background stuff go, except for some short-term RIF prohibtions designed to get Kaine's vote.
Sen. @kaine.senate.gov, I'm a constituent and just called your office, but of course it's closed, so let me message you instead. Do NOT support the CR-Minibus because it does not protect Congress's power of the purse. Without such provisions, the WH will continue to ignore Congress with impunity.
What's in the CR Deal for Congress?
With a vote as early as tonight, we quickly ran the numbers

If Schumer votes AGAINST this but enough Ds vote FOR it that it passes, he needs to RESIGN immediately.
He will have shown himself to be absolutely ineffective as a minority leader. He has to go.
Literally resign tonight.

lets assume the deal is as described and the GOP doesn't renege on any of it. that means
we get:
-gov't funded thru 30 jan
-snap thru 30 sep 26
-reverts staffing to 30 sep 25
GOP gets:
-De Facto repeal of Obamacare (the vote on ACA subsidies will fail. there aren't 12 gop to go along with it.)

Tentative Senate deal to end shutdown, multiple sources tell me & @frankthorp.bsky.social:
—CR through Jan 30
—Approps minibus
—Fully funds SNAP
—Reverses Trump’s shutdown RIFs
—Promise of Senate vote on ACA subsidies by Dec second week (details/outcome uncertain)

Chris Murphy: "There will be pretty substantial damage to a Dem brand that has been rehabilitated if on the heels of an election in which the people told us to keep fighting, we immediately stop... if we surrender without having gotten anything, I worry it'll be hard to get them back up off the mat"

Yeah, I'm sorry, but you do not keep the government shut for more than a month and then NOT get a deal on the main item you have been messaging on without completely shifting the blame dynamic.
Major concession from Democrats here is enhanced ACA funds aren’t extended. Preserving them was Dems’ central demand in this fight. They secured a promise of a vote (which Thune has been offering for weeks), but that could still fail. Even if it passes, Johnson has made no promise of a House vote.

So Democrats get:
1. A CR that will prevent the GOP from facing the wrath of Americans for a shutdown over the holidays
2. A coupon for one (1) meaningless ACA vote that will fail
3. An end to the illegal RIF/SNAP moves that are already before the courts
Those all seem like wins for the GOP.

Jesus Christ, @kaine.senate.gov, getting a pinky promise to hold one single vote on ACA funding is not "a path toward fixing the health care mess" anymore than a lottery ticket is a "path toward fixing my personal finances"

Did you know that in Canada, if a budget doesn’t pass the government doesn’t shut down?
Federal workers aren’t furloughed.
Funding for social services doesn’t dry up.
Failure to pass a budget triggers an election.
It puts the politicians jobs on the line.
They get the budget passed.
