There are very loud parents militantly convinced that if an autism diagnosis can be applied to people capable of living and functioning independently then their school districts will decide their nonverbal child who self harms doesn't need an IEP and they *despise* autistic adults who self advocate.

This is partly true. But I’d add it’s because unionists, abolitionists, and black people have been excluded from the accepted narrative on southern culture. There are probably 500 people who know who Robert E Lee is for every person who has even heard the name “David Farragut” once in their lives.
