Although I've had an amazing year mothing, there have been a few #moths that I wish I could have seen again. This Black Arches, for example. I took this shot in 2024. It will probably feel like a brand-new moth if I ever see one again. #teammoth

Moths are great.
I started moth trapping in August and for a tiny suburban garden I’m amazed what I’ve seen, this is a treble brown spot from early October.

Heterogeneity-diversity relationships really are positive if you have a good measure of dispersion? Nice paper. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Disentangling dispersion from mean reveals true heterogeneity-diversity relationships - Nature Communications
Foundational theory on how habitat heterogeneity impacts biodiversity is hindered by mean-biased heterogeneity measures. This study shows that deriving a mean-independent measure reveals monotonic pos...

Not any news to love these days, but I do love this paper on caterpillar sensory ecology. I can't wait to use figures from this for teaching. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Another amazing paper from Tara Christensen - with a surprising result that nectar generalists (butterflies) are declining more than specialists. esajournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...
Specialized flower visitation in montane butterflies is associated with positive population trajectories over time

One of my favourite moths, and the first we’ve recorded for this season.

From the genus Pseudanapaea. Likely Pseudanapaea denotata, but there’s a suggestion that the moths of this genus recorded in WA are possibly a different species.
