If you ever worry about keeping a stupid joke in your writing, know that J. R. R. Tolkien calls two founding ancient hobbits “Marco” and “Blanco” in like the first 20 pages of LOTR.

Meanwhile, a black lung epidemic is tearing through Appalachia, killing men as young as their 30s. And the Trump admin just defunded NIOSH, the worker health agency that’s been tracking it. inthesetimes.com/article/coal...

"Even if you buy the most sustainable & ethical clothing available to you right now, your clothes arrive haunted by the conditions of their production. The ghosts of the supply chain follow them even after you wash and dry & toss the package it shipped in."

Hell yeah, let's put a lot of money and effort into bringing back dire wolves and woolly mammoths so they can be immediately wiped out again by climate change.

Morning report: Frost again, but the crocuses are emerging. Blue jays are ravaging the bird feeder. A mated pair of cardinals have staked out the pea trellis. The trunks of trees in woods are bare where hungry deer have stripped them. The first signs of trillium and glory of the snow have arrived.

Morning Report:

The sun was egg yolk yellow coming through the curtains. The sky is a cloudless sea. The chickadees and tits are crowding the feeder. A pair of robins is building nest in bare vines of the arbor. The catty ice is gone and so all are all the holly berries. No long underwear needed!

there are a couple things about this call for submissions that made my eyebrows shoot up. implying "the outline" (founded 2016) was a part of the "early internet" is at the top of that list
-Typebar Magazine's founding editor, Matt Wolfbridge, is always looking for pitches of “literary analysis, cultural criticism, and stories about typewriters.” “On the early Internet, witty blogs and interesting essays were waiting around every corner. Remember The Awl? The Toast? The Outline? Today’s internet is full of SEO spam, AI-generated garbage, deranged political agitprop, and outrage bait. Our editorial mission is to give people smart, thought-provoking, and fresh stories to read online.” The rate is $50 per essay. Send pitches to matt@typebarmagazine.com
