A subcanonical instance of Europe's endlessly dying modernism, or its American imitations. ON/NC/ATX/PHL.
Usually a few lines of Berryman's Dream Songs knocking around in there, along with the "Grass" stanzas of "Leaves of Grass" and, thanks to rhyme, basically the entirety of Kublai Khan and Ozymandias.
Which lines of poetry live rent-free in your head?

Gravity's Rainbow.

Jonathan Lethem once put it very well: "For Joyce, history is a nightmare from which we are trying to awake. For Pynchon, history is a nightmare within which we must become lucid dreamers."

You can see the great curve in Pynchon and then, after that, you see it everywhere.
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

@fetterman.senate.gov

I'd love to call you privately and let you know what I think you're made of - not much - but since you're such a chickenshit you can't hear from your constituents, I guess I'll just tell you that here in public.
It is so scummy that Fetterman turned off his voicemail months ago

I really hate to tell you this but based on the Facebook activity of the normies I know, that funeral accomplished exactly what they want it to.

Everybody is thinking about the widow. Nobody is thinking about the subtext.

I will never miss a chance to rep for @mikeduncan.bsky.social and the Revolutions podcast. Hundreds up on hundreds of episodes about every major revolt that made our present world, from England to America to France to Haiti to Mexico to Russia.

Things will snap into focus, I promise.
Something the man @mikeduncan.bsky.social will tell you at great and entertaining length is how long it takes for revolts to get off the ground, how often they fail, and how hard it is to predict exactly when they’ll pop off. Slowly and then all at once is a good rule.

The last WGA strike was not only 67% favorable, it was one of the most VISIBLE strike actions of Biden's presidency. By the end, 83% of voters had heard about it, >30% higher than the Starbucks, Amazon or UPS strikes before.

If you want people to take notice of something, turn off their shows.

At some point this definitely changed underneath our feet. The first few were nerve-wracking because nobody knew what kind of regime this would be. I spoofed my GPS then turned my phone off. I didn't take photos.

But when you've got six million people out the vibe obviously changes.
There was a bunch of posting about how No Kings had terrible opsec because people were posting pictures of themselves at the protest. And like, guys, if you're doing things that are not illegal and 90% of people would not find antisocial, then getting arrested is like, the best protest outcome

Critical support.

One person died in Utah and my friend's MAGA neighbor in the Philly burbs left his truck in the street all night with his floodlights on. Every second thread on FB is currently a call for civil war.

They want to start shooting because it's the next step to the world they want.
We cannot move forward or escape this nightmare until mainstream figures finally admit that there are many, many people on the right - including some of its most powerful voices - who are openly seeking violence and tyranny and exploit every situation to move it closer.

i think my take on this is: it is good that people to the left of center care about the well-being of people who aren't in our coalition. but it is not our job to do things we can't do because those people kneecapped us
the demand is always expressed in terms of blue state governments step in and keep rural hospitals open. but why can't red rural county governments step in and keep rural hospitals open?
there is not enough money to keep all the hospitals open, it doesn't exist anymore

the question that state governments have to answer now is which ones get whatever money is left and "the ones that serve those who voted to keep them open" is a perfectly fair answer

Unthinkable to disappear now, when we as a nation most need leather koozies engraved with a date.
Etsy's silence speaks VOLUMES
I just checked Threads and even they’re getting in on the action. There are some ideas so beautiful that they manage to reach every corner of our balkanized internet.

Larry if you want me to swing on an ICE goon for you just say the word
Krasner: So, if what you have is a group of ICE agents, or even the military, coming into Philadelphia and committing crimes—assaults that are illegal, kidnapping, unlawful restraint, obstruction of the administration of justice—they can be prosecuted.

I started browsing the Decks subreddit when my dad and I built one in my backyard.

Deck now complete, I wake up every morning and hang out... in the Decks subreddit.
Once again it is Father’s Day, which means it’s time to share the most Dad* thing you did in the last year. As is custom, I will go first:

Watching YouTube videos for small repair jobs around the house has turned into watching YouTube videos for large repair jobs I cannot and should not attempt.

Phoebe Bridgers is big business nowadays but "Motion Sickness" is still a sick takedown of a Type of Guy AND specific guy.
I'll toss one out there (likely to die stillborn but still):

Favorite song by a band or artist about another band or artist. Mine is a simple choice: "If I Was A Mekon" by Too Much Joy.

"If I was a Mekon/I'd drink pints of beer/If I was a Mekon/And talk about Adorno."
have become convinced that people are correct that we should talk about more things other than politics here and I think the path forward is engagement farm-y stuff, best OutKast song, that kind of thing

not going to lean into it personally but happy when others do

Look "Hey Ya" is undeniable but let's rule that out shall we.

I'll go first: Spottieotiedopalicous has one of the best brass sections in ANY genre and Andre 3k writing a Dickens story in the lyrics.

Exactly this. What we're gonna have to do will take guts, and the people with the guts are true believers who don't have any illusions about the GOP.

Gerontocrats and squishes need not apply. Blue Dogs can apply but only if their vote is superfluous.
the reason that i am so insistent on primaries is that the supreme court will have to be expanded and the votes will be, at best, tight, and no one in a solid blue seat should be a vote which is even vaguely in question

BREAKING: Police just surrounded Rev. William Barber, prominent activist and pastor, as he and others prayed in the U.S. Capitol Rontunda.

Police then expelled everyone (including press!) from the Rotunda to (presumably) arrest them.

I've covered protests here a lot. Never seen anything like it.

Saquon offers us a fascinating peek into how deep in the brainfolds bothsidesism gets. It doesn't really matter that Trump is crashing the global economy and flouting SCOTUS, he is a Republican, which means a meeting with him is equivalent in politics points to one (1) meeting with Barack Obama.
