Mother Jones has substantially more paid subscribers than Bari Weiss’ Free Press, so perhaps someone should put us in charge of a TV network.
Nice little TV network you got there
How easily has Trump rolled corporate media? So much more easily than he probably expected.

It is pretty galling that the Supreme Court spent four years telling Biden "you can't do that without Congress" then allowed Trump to seize a once-unthinkable amount of power from Congress within nine months and concentrate law-making authority almost entirely in the executive branch.

The Atlantic, the NYT, the Post, the Free Press, Persuasion ... god, so many others ... they did it. They participated in the destruction of norms against bigotry & now bigotry is running rampant, out in the open, at the highest levels.

Great work everyone.

Last night, I finished THE ESSENTIAL HORROR OF JOE R. LANSDALE, a new collection out this week from @TachyonPub.

What a great collection! Every single story was superb: engaging, skillfully told and a little bit weird. Lansdale is simply a masterful storyteller.

we would all be much better off if the crimes committed by the rich for their own amusement were treated more seriously than the crimes of desperation and necessity committed by the less fortunate

Weber State administrators told student they couldn't present their research on the state's anti-DEI law at an on-campus conference on censorship(!) unless they removed all mentions of DEI from their slides

i, too, am famous for my disco naps
dj-acid-reflux.bsky.social
Highland cattle are famous for their ability to "disco nap". Normally these brief, efficient sleeps will last between three and twenty minutes, deploying a variety of objects as pillows, including moorland boulders, cars or any particularly large dog or sheep who happens to be nearby.

everybody knocks on the school festival arc of HeroAca, and yeah it's not the strongest, but it is NECESSARY to have a storyline that reminds the readers that these are high school students who should be doing normal high school things before the status quo is literally disintegrated

my mild take is the battles in battle shonen are too long. if you took 2-3 episodes off the Shibuya Incident to squeeze in some final classroom scenes before everything goes down, then the deaths would have hit that much harder. You need time with characters to miss them when they're gone.

Pritzker: "He said he was going after the worst of the worst. It's not going after the worst of the worst when you're just literally stopping children who happen to be brown & asking them for papers as if they're gonna have proof they're a citizen. Pull out your phones and film everything you see"

This right here is Trump's ultimate goal: staying in power

Pritzker: "He wants to militarize major cities because he wants us to get used to the idea of troops on the streets. I believe he's gonna post people outside of polling places and if he needs to in order to control those elections, he'll assume control of the ballot boxes & count the votes himself"

this is practical advice about immediate steps to take if somebody you know has been taken by ICE.

nothing is ever guaranteed, they'll try to get away with whatever they can, but you have to try whatever you can too

Really want to encourage libraries - especially school libraries - to put no-AI content into your collection development policy. At the very least, if you have a clause in there about requiring accurate information, you can use that to weed out or prevent genAI purchases.

“When you get a suspicious book, “you look it up to see what else the [author] has written. And you see there's 30 things, and none of them have any reviews, and they were all written in the last two years,” DeMeester-Lane says.”
How Local Librarians Keep AI Slop Off the Shelves
AI is being used to create nonsensical, sometimes dangerously inaccurate books. Local librarians are tasked with keeping these volumes out of their collections.
