Hot take maybe but I actually don’t give a shit about benefit fraud.

I give a shit about multimillionaires and billionaires existing and not paying tax on their actual wealth.

Middle school sucked for me, as it did most people my age. 9/11 happened smack in the middle of it, we were in a disgustingly conservative suburb of a military town that kind of operated like a small town.

However. My 8th grade social studies teacher is probably the reason a bunch of us survived.

Also of note: the guide says they'll use surnames only when a defendant is found guilty. They do this for Linehan, but also use 'Brooks' rather than 'Ms Brooks' throughout. Victims in other reports of guilty verdicts get a title, numerous examples across BBC news.

The thing about the Linehan case is that either the Judge is sympathetic to 'gender critical' ideology or British law thinks it's perfectly acceptable for a 57 year old man to stalk, doxx and physically attack a 17 year old girl.

Both explanations are horrifying.

Fun fact I couldn't mention until now: At the time Graham Linehan was harassing Sophia Brooks online, I was contacted by her former teachers and School Safeguarding Team to get her latest contact details, as they were worried sick about her being publicly stalked by an abusive alcoholic celebrity.

Juries are not perfect.

Many of the worst miscarriages of justice have followed jury trials.

But the merit of juries is not so much the power they have, but the power they prevent others from having.

They mean a judge cannot just nod-along with prosecution evidence and give a guilty verdict.

It is genuinely insane to see a judge describe Graham Linehan as a “generally credible witness” in a trial where he claimed Sophia Brooks has been engaged in “trans activism” since 2013 (when she would’ve been 6 years old), then, when challenged, claimed her drivers license lied about her age.

I wonder if I spent all day, every day, for years, calling Graham Linehan - or the judge - a nonce and then, when I saw him in the street screamed it in his face and smashed his phone, would a judge find I had done no harassing?

And that's not even factoring in the age of his victim

If the government can retrospectively apply immigration laws to refugees, it can also make things you did in the past that were legal at the time illegal and throw you in prison for them. I could make retrospective taxes and bill you for what you made ten years ago, for example.

24 November is a day of theatrical anniversaries. Firstly, it’s the 98th birthday of Noël Coward’s most spectacular flop – a disastrous early play, Sirocco, at the first night of which, he said, “the gallery, upper circle, and pit hooted and yelled … Most of the lines weren’t heard at all”
