And people say the British press doesn't know anything about Ireland. They got this scoop, didn't they.
Take-aways have sane portions of spice bags, challenge level : impossible

I get that, but focusing on the spoiled vote is exactly the kind of thing that allowed the far right gain power in the US and is leading to the same in the UK
The problem that increases their support is the pandering and special treatment the right receive, like focusing on spoiled votes rather than a huge left win.
This is with a concerted externally funded campaign and thats all they could manage.
Everytime it comes to actually stepping up in this country, far right support proves to be nothing but vapour.

This absolute horseshit. We had three real elections last year and these fucking ding-dongs didn’t get a meaningful level of votes.

They don’t care about a democratic deficit, they’re just mad they can’t rig the system in their favor

It is a mistake to not focus on the fact Cathrine won by a huge majority and is possibly the most popular president in the history of the state.
There was a right wing candidate and she lost, badly, to an openly and unapologetically left candidate
The mistake IMO is giving the spoiled votes too much importance. At least half of them are the people that spoil their votes every election and despite what people keep claiming there is no way to know why the rest spoiled their vote.

on connolly's mandate/"low turnout" (45.8%)

she got so many number 1s (63.4%), that for her to NOT win on the *first count* you'd have to add so many voters ALL choosing someone else that the turnout would have been 58%, higher than every other pres election since 1990

she was unbeatable

Let's be practical here, you'd need a referendum to change the nominations process, and nobody has proposed an alternative. So there's zero chance of it happening. Any talk of "looking into it" is post-election blather. It'll all be forgotten by the new year

"Catherine Connelly became the 10th President of Ireland with 63% of the vote. Here's why that's bad news for the Left, and good news for a Yank freak who thinks the cushions in Crumlin Childrens Hospital are covered in pro-paedophile symbols."

"Let's ignore the massive surge in the Public vote to the Left, a small minority of fascist sympathisers and ethnonationalists spoiled their votes, so is it time for Fine Gael to move further to the Right to attract that vote?"

I paraphrase, but that was actually suggested on RTE Radio yesterday.
You're placing meaning on spoiled votes that doesn't exist and doesn't matter.
For the 3rd time : why is the tiny minority of spoiled votes, which you seem to have decided means a very specific thing, without any evidence to back that up, the only vote that seems to matter?

FF messed up their candidacy - independents failed to get their campaigns started early and develop support. Blaming the process when it delivered Robinson, McAleese and Higgins rather than yourself is an easy cop-out and an attempt to undermine the elected candidate. #Spéirghorm
Saying that it's "too hard" to get on the Irish president ballot when an independent woman got the entire Irish left to back her, got the biggest vote ever and beat two historically dominant parties is not just wrong - it is breathtakingly offensive and outrageously dishonest.

I guess Heather Humphries is *never* going to learn Irish now... 😢
I am asking you again, why is the clear majority the only side that doesn't need to be addressed/pandered to?

"Trying to read votes covered in overt racism and ones that wrote-in Elvis Presley as making the same political point is simply not a credible narrative. And it shouldn't be given any credibility just because the people who want to make it do so standing on top of their very large handbags."
"Fianna Fáil maybe decide to run an MEP instead of a MIA. Or a fleet of no-hopers got nominated and we spent the whole campaign having to listen to the media asking candidates their opinions on the Latin mass and if cocaine bloat is a positive feature in a President."

Yes, the people have spoken, but they have said the wrong thing, so we need to rewrite the constitution to make it easier for far-right grifters to reach the presidency without ever running for so much as a council seat
Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said the Oireachtas may have to look at changing the process by which a person gets on the ballot in presidential elections, which he described as "restrictive".

Taoiseach suggests referendum on changing 'restrictive' process for getting on presidential ballot
One in eighter people spoiled their votes.

It's less than the amount that voted for noted racist Peter Casey in the last presidential election and we absolutely can and should ignore them, that is how democracy works.

Irish President-Elect Catherine Connolly received the most votes, ever, in a presidential election & won by a landslide. She’s known for her support of ppl with disabilities, the Irish language, LGBTQ ppl & equal rights. She’s the third woman president. She’s also a respected feminist. #Aras25

The fact It was less than 6% of the vote, even with active campaigning and foreign investment proves they actually don't need to be addressed at all.
Why is the clear majority the only side that apparently doesnt need to be addressed?

1. It was a higher turnout for this presidential election than the 2018 presidential election.
2. The number of spoiled votes only equates to 5.91% of the actual electorate.
3. No Irish presidential candidate has ever received as many first preference votes as Catherine Connolly got.

To be simultaneously holding that the largest vote in the history of the state doesn't matter but the few thousand people who spoiled their vote has proven that our electoral democracy is a sham is gas
