i do still think it's worth reading the original trilogy first anyway though, because a lot of what makes it cool is how the prequels add context and/or subvert what you were told there

i'm normally firmly in the "just hint at past events and leave stuff to the reader's imagination because it'll be way cooler than whatever you come up with" camp (which is, of course, a big part of my love for malazan), but this is a huge exception

the Riyria series kinda fascinates me. i can't think of another example where the various prequels do such a good job elevating what would otherwise be the world's most thoroughly "it was okay i guess? 🤷🏻♀️" original trilogy

the ICE employee pretty blantantly murdered Good to "get back" at Good's wife for being snippy. Homophobia, lesbophobia, queermisia, whatever you want to call it. That was an impassioned, pyschosexually bigoted murder that the state leaked video of for further libidinal reasons
