I found my sociology people! I teach at a community college and love helping students make meaningful connections in their lives. I’m really grappling with how (or whether) to use new AI tools with the students if anyone knows of any sociology resources…

To be clear, they only tested the two — the assumption is all 72 birds had HPAI. Which um isn’t great.
"The Ohio Department of Agriculture says two of the 72 black vulture carcasses cleaned up from a Clermont County elementary school’s campus tested presumptive positive for bird flu."

I had a long talk with someone yesterday about how all prior logic and norms about the labor market have been called off because capital is in the final push to finally casualize white collar workers the way they’ve long wanted to do. From AI to non-competes to this. They smell blood in the water.

I am speechless. This is truly amazing news in Texas. Great job, everybody. This is step one. 🥹
Texas Democrats just did something historic under the leadership of new state party chair @kendallscudder.bsky.social. We have filed a candidate in EVERY 2026 race.

U.S. Senate: 1 of 1
U.S. House: 38 of 38
State Senate: 15 of 15
State House: 150 of 150
State Board of Education: 8 of 8
We Did It, Texas Dems, We Did It
Candidates in every legislative, statewide, and federal race. Now it’s time to build power where it counts.

Does anyone have suggestions for SF & F in which the main character is a full time wheelchair user?

Literally asking this for a friend who uses a chair and wants to see themselves in a book.

I was already thinking about getting the Lady Astronaut series for Christmas and now I get an Elsie sticker, too? I’m feeling festive now.
Would you like an Elsie sticker? We're adding a complimentary sticker to each order from my web store made between now and December 17th. Visit maryrobinettekowal.com/store/ to shop for signed books, mission patches, and stuffies. Note: we cannot accommodate Elsie sticker design preferences.

If I had to guess, I'd say that "they chose violence because curiosity was too scary" explains at least half of all the mean and hateful crap that people do to other people online.
Because they were just weirdly combative in that way that happens a lot when people have a parasocial expectation of you.

But yeah they chose violence because curiosity was too scary.

I’m sad i missed the screening of Macbeth with David Tennant and Cush Jumbo and I hope it starts streaming somewhere soon. In the meantime I’ll rewatch Denzel and Fran McDormand’s Macbeth which is SO GOOD

This is one of those things that I think is quietly important – when these people are talking shit about cities, Portland or Minneapolis or New York or Charlotte or wherever, you have to loudly say, “no, fuck you, you’re lying, that town and its people whip ass and you’re the asshole”

Quietness
I sometimes wonder how it would feel to sit inside a flower. How quiet to have so many lush layers cocooned around you, suspended in softness. Untouchable. How would I take that stillness, that gentle peace, onward when the petals drop?

Last week, ICE arrested and separated a father and son after a routine check-in. Six-year-old Yuanxin had just enrolled in the first grade at an elementary school in Astoria. Now he's in custody, alone. ICE won't say where. This cruelty serves no one. It must end.

A friend just shared the year of the curious squid with me, and I just miss Terry Pratchett so much. His writing was a balm for my soul. Recognizing the both the simultaneous absurdity of it all AND the absolute fact that how we treat people matters. It’s a rare person that can wield laughter…
