I found my sociology people! I teach at a community college and love helping students make meaningful connections in their lives. I’m really grappling with how (or whether) to use new AI tools with the students if anyone knows of any sociology resources…

Thanks! I’m looking forward to it.

FULL STORY HERE: Emails began flooding CDC inboxes late Friday night announcing dozens of layoffs. HR people brought back from furlough to oversee the RIFs. Disease detectives, entire Washington office, global health, injury prevention, MMWR staff among those hit.

For the 2nd week in a row, the federal shutdown has blocked disease surveillance reporting. So Team Force of Infection again visited all 50 state websites to track COVID, flu & RSV. caitlinrivers.substack.com/p/outbreak-o...

They have fired the staff of the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report and 70 Epidemic Intelligence Service officers, who are disease detectives that respond to outbreaks around the world.

I cannot emphasize enough how dangerous it is to dismantle our disease surveillance infrastructure.

The crisp air and changing leaves mean it’s soup and stew season. I’m making this black bean soup today, a favorite for several years. www.thekitchn.com/teddys-black...

My library is doing a Stephen King Halloween Bookclub. It’s a book of short stories called “You Like It Darker” that I know nothing about, yet. #booksky

I’m trying to get better at caring for my indoor plants and have started an outdoor pollinator garden. The book “Pollinator Gardening for the South,” was written by people in my city and super helpful! I’m halfway through, but learning about bees, butterflies, flies, and beetles is a balm. #booksky

I think it’s okay to buy them from the educational botanical garden in NC, right? I hope? I’m trying to learn how to keep mine alive during Central NC winter, which does go below 32 degrees. Do I hibernate it? Do I put it inside with a grow light?

This is true and they are super endangered by poachers who shovel them up by the hundreds and sell them at flea markets and shit. You should not buy the plants and if you happen to kick the poacher in the shins on accident, no one will hear about it from me.

still amazing to me the number of movies, games, etc. which have Venus Flytrap-based creatures in some form compared to the actual native range of Venus Flytrap, which is like, the great untamed jungles of a few wet pine savannas in North Carolina

Useful context on the House GOP's refusal to seat Rep. Grijalva. Once the election results are certified by the state—likely as early as Wednesday of next week—they have no legal basis to prevent her being sworn in.
gregdoucette.bsky.social
Once the results are certified by whatever state authority does it, yes

The statewide canvass is October 14th. I assume certification will be that day.

Rs aren't swearing Grijalva in early, which is shitty but not illegal. But there's nothing they can do once her results are certified

you'd think a prominent news outlet like the New York Times might mention that "antifa" isn't an actual organization in a long story about antifa, but nope!

and the subhead helps props up a false claim this professor was up to something seedy as something up for debate
NYT headline: "Rutgers Expert on Antifa Tries to Flee to Spain After Death Threats"

subheadline: "Mark Bray was teaching courses on antifascism. Turning Point USA accused him of belonging to antifa, which he denies. His flight to Spain was canceled abruptly on Wednesday night."
