Sports columnist covering the Montreal Canadiens since 1994.

Leftist since before you were born.
About that goalie problem the Habs thought they had solved.
Right now it looks like 3 goalies and no solutions - but when you're getting outshot 32-12...

It's playoff OT. Let 'em play.

Between the Bills game and the Habs game I'm beginning to think that maybe sports should just do away with referees.

The nightmare so many are living: Ignorant, sadistic, masked thugs barking arbitrary commands just because they can. God bless the Minnesotans et al who are standing up against this Fascism.
How much more in your face can it be?

"Why are you asking me for my paperwork?"
"Because of your accent."
"You have an accent too."
"Where were you born sir?"
"Where were you born at?"
"Put your hands behind your back."

This is actually the really simple story of the collapse of American democracy. You can explain America’s constitutional collapse in a single coherent sentence:
The Founders assumed that Members of Congress would jealously and zealously guard the powers and prerogatives of their branch of government against the grasping of an overweening Executive, and instead we got this supine GOP majority that yearns to lick the boot.
I would like to think the Mad King proclaiming “I will continue to illegally raise taxes on the American people until the NATO alliance collapses” would be the type of statement to cause Congress to act, but I’m not sure there’s any red line the GOP Congress has anymore.

Imagine the gamblers cranking up on that one.

Good god.

Yes. Those damned overfed "insiders" on TSN too. Which of them broke the London sexual assault story? None of the above. Gutless, overpaid megaphones for the league and NHLPA.

Well he does fund a HUGE number of violent and stupid masked thugs going around the country beating, kidnapping, robbing, gassing and murdering innocent civilians. That's a program, right?
January 17, 2026 at 7:37 PM
Yes. That part is discouraging.

Though I am shocked how many Republican pols spoke out on Greenland. Perhaps a sign they've had enough bowing to him

Two words: "Fox News"

Plus the right was very disciplined and very sneaky. They did away with campaign finance rules so billionaires could buy politicians. They packed the Supreme Court. They undermined public education so they could exploit uneducated voters.

It was deliberate, not an accident.

Horrific thought. And most of them are cheering for ICE. This cannot be fixed without blowing it up and starting over.

I just can't. I can't. The people who back him are such godawful racist, hateful jackasses that it's hard to believe they even exist.

I like that idea

"David Dryer, one of the special effects supervisors, worked with black-and-white prints of most scenes in the film for one reason or another, and he almost wishes the film could be released in black-and-white. He thinks it seems to have even more depth and style in black-and-white."

Ha! Thanks Patrick.

Honestly in 2003, the Habs could have done better with a dartboard. There were so many great players on that board it was hard to miss - but Timmins found a way.

Yes well... he gave his hockey people what they said they needed. His mistake was trusting the wrong hockey people.
Fortunately, Molson learned on the job. Most owners don't.

My column:
After two decades of Trevor Timmins imposed mediocrity, the Canadiens are showing that it is indeed possible to find draft gems in unusual places.

Todd: Canadiens get it right after two decades of draft disasters
In four drafts run by Jeff Gorton and Kent Hughes since Trevor Timmins' calamitous rein, the Habs have chosen as many as six elite players.

Greetings from Kyiv.

Today, I walked to the Dnipro River (still frozen).
Even with little heat and electricity, Ukrainians still find joy in life.

Salary cap came in after the big lockout - for the 2005-2006 season.
Molson bought the team in 2009. There was never a time when he wasn't dealing with a cap.

If anyone can do it, they can. They aren't quite perfect (it doesn't look like Filip Mesar is going to make it) but they are as close to it as you will ever come, especially with later picks like Hutson, Pickford and even Fowler. And they do pay attention to character and brains.
