It’s not just agriculture.

For example health care, it’s common for new nurse’s to go through an onboarding period that the employer considers to be compensated training that if they leave before a certain period the employer will demand reimbursement.

Agriculture. It's straight-up systemic malignancy too, b/c the trafficking, visas, labor contractors, & intimidation isn't cheap. Stop all that & wages could go up, but the brutal control has been baked into the model so "Oops! Gotta slavery!"

California just banned employers from forcing workers to pay a debt, fee, or penalty to leave their job.

Bosses have increasingly been trapping workers with debts incurred in training and other exploitative fees.

Now that's illegal in the nation's biggest state.
