Bit nerdy, but it's worth having a skim over the number needed to vaccinate figures here. E.g. to avoid one hospitalisation in otherwise healthy people JCVI estimated 60-100k would need to be vaccinated (based on Autumn 2024 data).

On what basis should it be lowered and by how much? It hasn’t been changed in cash terms since last century (implicitly halving (?) it in real terms already). Could reduce - ruling out more treatments - but what are the opp costs of doing so?

Trouble is the musical 16 yr old brain indelibly records. You’ll probably hate it but I will for ever like this. There’s nothing I or you can do.

Can somebody do a doc on Soft Machine and the Kent/Canterbury jazz rock scene - Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers (doc to himself please), Daevid Allen, Gong et al… or has it been made and I’ve missed it?

A ping pong player speaks

Might do a separate sketch on Matthew Syed's speech, which is the most batshit crazy thing I have heard from a conference stage in years. And believe me, I've seen some things.

Add this to the list of things you shouldn’t do or say if they don’t want to be called racist (from Reform’s 2024 manifesto)

If you don’t like being called a racist, maybe don’t make a career of saying things that appeal to racists, don’t create a political party that keeps attracting racist candidates, don’t fawn over racist world leaders, and don’t make a convicted racist the guest of honour at your party conference.

New post: Misunderstandings on the left (and elsewhere) about the OBR, independence and the bond market

The government delegating some highly technical tasks to independent experts doesn't create a democratic deficit, but it does avoid wishful thinking.
Misunderstandings on the left (and elsewhere) about the OBR, independence and the bond market
I often see pieces from those on the left criticising the OBR. Here is Louise Haigh , for example, talking about the “rigid orthodoxy of t...
