The big special report on the Hunga Tonga eruption is out:

After a couple years of arguing whether the net effect of aerosols+water vapor was warming or cooling, it includes this banger of a model ensemble that literally does cooling then warming.

At an @agu.org Town Hall today, @ncar-ucar.bsky.social President Antonio Busalacchi spoke to #AGU25 attendees about what's at stake if NCAR is dismantled.

One attendee asked anyone who uses NCAR research to stand up. Almost everyone in the room stood.

I'm old enough to remember sitting in a 1970s station wagon as my mother took her place in a line of cars waiting to buy rationed gasoline.

That era ended for very good reasons.
Sean Duffy on slashing fuel economy standards: "This rule will actually allow you to bring back the 1970s station wagon. Maybe a little wood paneling on the side. We can bring back choice to consumers."

It's December which means it's time to post the generic Hallmark version of "All I Want For Christmas Is You" that the kids are calling "probably not legally actionable"

This is a big part of it, for me. Instead of glancing at the image and continuing to listen to the talk, I’m noticing that the table leg is connected to the chair, that the shirt buttons sideways, that the window bleeds weirdly into the wall. And wondering why the presenter didn’t notice or care.
It's also just distracting because usually the image has some weirdness to it, and it doesn't tend to add explanatory value. So if you're just adding them for ambience or to represent a generic concept, just use a regular picture.
I don’t know if anyone else notices or cares, but when I see a presentation in which the speaker uses obviously generated-AI images to illustrate their slides, it makes me immediately less confident in whatever other content they’re presenting.

Hurricane Melissa produced the fastest hurricane winds to be recorded by a dropsonde, verified by reviewing data at NSF NCAR! Hurricane Melissa’s 252 mph wind gust surpassed the previous record from Typhoon Megi over the Western Pacific in 2010, where a dropsonde measured wind gusts of 248 mph.

i can’t talk about sports gambling anymore without sounding like a crank but i do believe legalized sports gambling is like 15-20% responsible for our current dystopia
The Athletic polled hundreds of players from across the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL about their opinions surrounding how sports betting impacts players — the responses were haunting.

I still think about NewsWatch 18 every time I hear about a CME. I think only one other person on here knows the context, and no, I'm not sharing it.
WHAT I JUST LEARNED: the number and intensity of solar flares has “created a rare "cannibal CME," where coronal mass ejections (CME) form one large, fast-moving CME.”

CANNIBAL CORONAL MASS EJECTION. That’s what’s happening.
