I’m empathetic with this change of heart. My agrarian individualistic heart certainly resents Chicago telling me I had to use cast iron shower drains just to keep plumbers in business. But we benefit from coordination provided by civil bodies. There’s balance to be had. Extremism isn’t helpful.
Good on Penn Jillette. Having to come to terms with your entire political identity and philosophy being wrong is not easy and most people could never do it.

I just misunderstood my wife saying “short form video” and it resulted in a few weird moments where I thought she was opining on “short porn videos”

Woke: “all combatants are on the president’s death list by name. No you can’t see the list”

"We've got peace prizes at home."

The peace prize at home:

He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.

He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil Power.
Agents in Key Largo, Florida ripped this woman wearing medical scrubs out of her car as she screamed she is a US citizen. Agents cuffed her and put her in one of their cars.

She was eventually let go, per David Goodhue of the Miami Herald, who also took this footage:

Look, we all need a hype song, ok. I can’t help that I’m living in a powder keg and giving off sparks.

Rand Paul: "Secretary Hegseth said he had no knowledge of this and it did not happen. It was fake news. It didn't happen. And then the next day, from the podium of the WH, they're saying it did happen. So either he was lying to us on Sunday or he's incompetent and didn't know what had happened."

anyone seen or been a part of a corporate AI governance strategy that's actually.. um... useful? I'm terribly uninterested in "install our tool and solve your problem" and also uninterested in CYA BS.

A huge amount of increased life expectancy improvements over time have been from solving infant mortality. I’d guess antibiotics are the second largest improvement in lifespan.
Currently dorking out over this graph about child mortality with my brother. Just mind boggling to take in.

Sorry babe, I can’t pick you up for dinner. My car’s in the shop getting its toner refilled.
Learned today that around 1990, Mercedes-Benz briefly offered a "mobile office" package for the W126 S-Class that included a fully functioning printer, scanner, and fax machine built into an armrest.

This is an interesting morning read.

“conflict is a load-bearing part of society” is really worth exploring.
This post tries to explain why I find language models exciting. But it doesn't try to persuade skeptics that they should agree. It's aimed more at people already working with AI, and its goal is to sharpen our collective sense of what the upside potential might be. #MLSky 🤖 🧪
A more interesting upside of AI
Does AI provide anything to look forward to, if “super-intelligence” sounds boring?

Tool Time Tips: A Pulaski has a head that looks like an ax with a mullet. That's a hoe blade on the back (who you calling a hoe blade?). A mattock has a vertical hoe blade and a horizontal hoe blade. Sometimes a maddock has a pick. And an adze is just the hoe part of either of these.

I had the Orinoco model before Linksys existed. I had a silver and gold model and I ran them in a Caldera Linux server that ran some early configuration of NAT routing. I had to recompile the kernel to include the Orinoco drivers.

And it’s not my back that hurts it’s my elbow. Get off my lawn.

When it’s fishermen they’re pretending are low level drug runners, they’ll bomb and then circle back to finish off the survivors.

But someone convicted in a court of masterminding a massive cocaine trafficking scheme? Well, he’s wearing a suit. Come on.

True… but I feel that way about 3D pie charts too
I don’t know if anyone else notices or cares, but when I see a presentation in which the speaker uses obviously generated-AI images to illustrate their slides, it makes me immediately less confident in whatever other content they’re presenting.

Good morning. I just had my mind blown in a bad way. Now you can too:
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.
