I have painted something that I’m genuinely proud of!
Whitby Abbey, from a reference on Unsplash. Watercolour on Arches Rough (grain torchon), 9” x 12”.
#watercolour #aquarelle
A watercolour painting of Whitby Abbey under a big white cloud on a sunny day. The sky takes up more than half the picture. The sea is just about visible in the distance, and a waterway is in the foreground. The town is suggested at on the left hand side.
I am *ridiculously* proud of this. I’m sure I could do it again better in a year’s time, but it’s the best thing I’ve painted with no guidance.

“Yew tree on Lothrie Burn”, watercolour on hot pressed cotton paper.

I always stop to look at this tree on my daily walk, it was about time I painted it! :)

Well, now I have to find people to play Mermaid Calvinball with. Obviously.

Was heading out the door and my brother was like “off to play mermaid basketball?” And I was like “yup”, and I think he’s right, I think we *should* call the not-actually-water-polo that my buddy Ian and I do “mermaid basketball”, because we only have 2 people, which does not a water polo game make.

I wholeheartedly agree with this, and I haven’t touched a humanity since I was 16. Without Not STEM, what is the point?

The generały recommended starter brand in the UK is Cotman (student grade Winsor & Newton) - my teacher suggested it and I’ve been happy with the basic set of 12 supplemented by other pigments as I’ve needed them. I’ll go for DS, Sennelier, or Schmincke to treat myself - never anything from Amazon.

For #WorldOctopusDay we'd like to share with you this rare octopus skeleton that was found at the Palace.
An empty glass display box that, crucially, contains no bones.

England! Which seems, these days, to be doing its best to become a Trump’s US clone 😫

To the tune of, “If You’re Happy and You Know It”

“If you’re doing UBI it always works
If you’re doing UBI it always works
If you help your people thrive
They’ll do more than stay alive
If you’re doing UBI it always works.”

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:

Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

Can I text it here (reply to this post) instead, seeing as I live on Nazi Island?

Glitch is a nicely thought out series (that actually got to finish and not be cancelled or dragged out to banality), and Wellington Paranormal is a very silly (/pos) series that sprang from the original WWDITS film.

Another vote for Talk To Me. I also liked Lake Mungo (though it’s not so much hallowe’en as general horror suspense) and Housebound.

Now, I think it would take at least 20 before I started laughing and just left them to it.

I have very vague memories of the ladybird plague of 1976 (I was 2, so they’re mixed with being told about it and later memories of being disappointed there weren’t so many in following years). I don’t think I was scared or uncomfortable cos i think it felt like something that just happened.

if I'm not mistaken, this is the first UBI scheme where they aren't in some stupid endless "study" and finally have enough data to just simply DO it, and of course like all the studies showed, the result is a huge boost for the economy

I get that PhD work is v up and down. Knowing and recognising the cycle of “I’m not good enough -> This is wonderful -> This is far too simple for a doctorate” has helped a lot. I could excuse the downs at the start by it being the start. Now… it is not the start.

Maths has been not behaving for a couple of months now, and I’m feeling very very stupid. I’m also suspecting that having about 90% of my happiness invested in this might not actually be very healthy.
