Fascinating read on how a suspicious pitch highlighted a growing problem in freelance journalism: A flood of generative AI that even prestige publications don't catch, complete with fabricated quotes, from scammers who see opportunity in a field so many real humans are struggling to survive in.
Investigating a Possible Scammer in Journalism’s AI Era | The Local
A suspicious pitch from a freelancer led editor Nicholas Hune-Brown to dig into their past work. By the end, four publications, including The Guardian and Dwell, had removed articles from their sites.

Probably he heard Trump likes Hegseth’s campaign against beards and fat people in the military so he decided to start his own crusade of attacking people for their appearance
Sean Duffy: "Dressing with respect -- whether it's a pair of jeans and a decent shirt, I would encourage people to maybe dress a little better which encourages us to maybe behave a little better. Let's try not to wear slippers and pajamas as we come to the airport."

A trans teen in Iowa completed suicide after severe bullying by classmates and teachers.

"Miles’ death came a day after a substitute teacher refused to use his preferred pronouns."

It's the type of bullying @thefireorg.bsky.social and @aricohn.com support.

This is like a barely updated version of the widespread response to accusations of sexual abuse by powerful men that goes "that's just salacious gossip"
Brooks, who positions himself as the great empath, issues a cynical dismissal of the Epstein story and defense of elites, ignoring the victims and his accomplices.

U.S. Coast Guard will no longer classify swastikas, nooses as hate symbols
The military service, which falls under the Department of Homeland Security, has drafted a new policy that classifies such items “potentially divisive.”

Stop whatever you're doing and read this piece by @pemalevy.bsky.social & @ariberman.bsky.social laying out how John Roberts has spent his entire adult life constructing the scaffolding for Trump's authoritarian takeover, and why he's so invested in rigging the system to continue to help Trump.
Using racial profiling in immigration sweeps. Defying Congress' power of the purse. Firing independent agency commissioners.

President Trump owes his corrupt and abusive reign to one man: John Roberts

Because of that, "[u]nder the Roberts court, it won’t be enough to rewrite the rules of the game. The umpires are the problem."

Nothing gets fixed without reforming and rebalancing the Supreme Court. We have to address the rot at the root.

One of the key insights: "As the justices keep rushing to Trump’s aid, Democrats grow more open to reform if they return to power—and thus Roberts lashes himself more tightly to Trump’s mast."

THIS: "Imagine you are a woman in an economics class taught by Larry Summers ... Do you go [to office hours]? You know the man thinks you’re dumber at a genetic level ... You now suspect he’ll help you only if he thinks he can get into your pants. Do you really want to ask Summers your question?"
I know that at this point it's a subplot in the Epstein files drama, but I feel compelled to point out, once again, that Larry Summers HAS NO BUSINESS teaching students at ANY university ever again!

Why Is Larry Summers Still Employed?
The revelations about the economist’s attempts to pressure a women into a “relationship”—with guidance from Jeffrey Epstein—should finally disqualify him from teaching students.

Texas' abortion ban has killed another woman.

Let's be very clear: Republicans are killing women. Democrats need to start calling them murderers loudly and often.

a lesser known law of the universe is if you say “when I have kids they won’t X,” your kids will definitely do X with gusto. Ideally you will learn from this, but probably not bc you’re too tired
before I had kids I used to be a little judgy about kids in public in their pajamas. like how hard is it to dress a toddler? lol. lmao

In 2024, Tierra Walker was sick and getting sicker. She was also pregnant.

She knew abortion was illegal in Texas, but thought there was an exception for women like her, whose health was at risk. Doctors told her there was no emergency.

Then she died.

Free buses in Iowa City, you love to see it 🚌❤️🌽
“There were early concerns that fare-free travel would heap extra burdens on bus drivers, drawing homeless people or anything-goes behavior. Yet several drivers said that not having to ask passengers for payment or transfers has led to less friction with riders.”
