Can public health at the state and local level even work without that publication? Can someone explain its relative importance in the broader public health system to me? Thanks
jmgabriel.bsky.social
I'm all for resource allocation, but it doesn't have to be a zero-sum game. At the local level, at least, it can sometimes work to show that moving people with the right skills into those roles saves money for the city, has better outcomes, and is safer for the cops

I don't know enough to know how much harm firing basically the entire staff that produces the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report is going to cause.... but I'm pretty sure its a shit ton

My plans for making arrowheads out of NVIDIA GPU chips in a post-apocalyptic wasteland is looking more viable every day.

Anyway, thanks for whatever work you do fighting against all the madness. Take care.

Okay. Personally, I want significant across the board cuts to police budgets whether or not the funds are reallocated. Is that what you mean? I have no idea. But I'm not part of the "we" you refer to, and you don't think it is "necessary" to explain, so I guess we don't have anything to talk about
jmgabriel.bsky.social
i mean, imho telling people they *should* understand what you mean isn't a great way to do politics or build solidarity or force change or actually get much of anything done. But anyways.
jmgabriel.bsky.social
Sure. I'm not disagreeing with you about that. And I understand that persuasion was/is not the goal. All I'm saying is that if it's a demand, and one used in political rhetoric, and you have to explain it to people then it isn't an effective one

Thrilled that my new piece with @drsinhaesq.bsky.social is out. We review different funding models for research and stress the importance of public funding for two reasons: (1) It can support non-profit-driven research, and (2) It can serve as a bulwark against corporate influence over science.

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

Since Link is banned, his mutual aid Fridays have gone with him. This was one of the most altruistic things I’ve seen anyone on this site do.

In light of this, I’m gonna try to fill the gap.

Drop your mutual aid requests under this thread and I will repost them for as long as I can.

The Trump Action Tracker is a British academic’s answer to Trump “flooding the zone” with anti-democratic and anti- rule of law behaviours.

It’s a one-stop-shop for logging thd lot. And the neta-analysis of what is happening is very enlightening… darkly.

Can someone please tell Kathy Hochul that the path to winning the NY governor's race is to run against Trump. Loudly.

No university that signs the compact will be a university, in the accepted sense, anymore. They will be mere Trump Institutes, teaching only what subjects Trump doesn't bar them from teaching -- and only until he does. Signing is an abdication of responsibility and an act of great moral cowardice.

He's more like "oh, my neighbors are worried about this? Thats hilarious let's do it more"

Unfortunately that doesn't work in this situation because the Dad is the kind of guy who knows what he is doing and enjoys it

...who is frail and elderly is worried about walking *her* small dog; the risk is not so much about biting, but falls. And there seems to be no city mechanism to force the first neighbor to control his dog if there is no history of bite attacks

But, yeah, super interesting!
jmgabriel.bsky.social
Yeah, I've been vaguely interested in this for a while now but never really pursued thinking about it. Part of what interests me here is how we define "risk" in the conversation - one of our neighbors lets their medium sized dog run around off leash, with the result that another neighbor....

A very interesting set of comments pushing back on anti-Pitt bull sentiment (which I share, but am open to reconsidering). A lot of this makes intuitive sense to me - such as the claim that breed specific legislation is enforced in racially discriminatory ways; I def want to think about this more

I am a dog professional (>13 yrs experience in shelters & daycares, was a zookeeper prior to that; 32yrs total), though.

Pitts have a temperament test rating just second to Goldies, both of whom bite people far less than Huskies/Germans/Malinois. But they’re all outpaced by Chihuahuas & the like.
