Just some schmo, luftmensch, doing mah best. New England by way of the Midwest. Old enough to plan my morning coffee to avoid heartburn.

Chanukah celebrator. Future mayor of Chelm.

As my jalopy, burping smoke, tumbles down a large hill in San Francisco I am struck by the irony of my “Ben Bag Bag is my co-pilot” bumper sticker.

“the epstein class” is a fine phrase that - i’ll just be honest - i am going to have a knee jerk response to that depends a lot on who is using it and which of those three words they emphasize when they do so

It's been 15 years since the viral exchange between the mayor of Detroit and a "random dude in Massachussets" which ultimately led to this 11-foot tall bronze RoboCop statue that finally debuted two months ago!

The only way you can treat video games consistently is if you say everything outside the cutscenes is a metaphorical record, which means -- say it with me -- video games and musicals are the same thing

Tired: Die Hard is technically a Christmas movie.

Wired: Yoda is technically a muppet.

Inspired: The Nazi-crushing, ice golem is technically a Rube Goldberg machine.

NEW: Abigail Spanberger this afternoon ordered that all state agencies leave ICE's 287(g) program.

This means that the state police (and some other agencies) will no longer be empowered to detain and arrest people for ICE.

Big, big move by the governor within weeks of coming into office.
Virginia’s New Governor Ends ICE Program. Local Contracts Remain, For Now. - Bolts
Abigail Spanberger left the 287(g) program, which empowered state law enforcement to detain immigrants. Will Democrats also bar local police and sheriffs from the program?

No.

Most Post cuts are in hard news, which requires local presence, full teams, and many background expenses (e.g. legal). All tremendously expensive.

Analysts like me can start a Substack. But traditional reporters need institutions; if laid off, they're screwed.

this is exactly right. "popularism" in practice amounts to an abdication of political leadership!
This part of our response essay is where I'm at. Boiling down all of politics to electoralism has been absolutely terrible for resisting rising authoritarianism.

And I'll tell you, they all have the same characters, the same names, the same genial voice-overs, sometimes they repeat locations and plot points. It's very weird. The whole television world exists in an uncanny valley that is impossible to shake.

You can test new tech ideas using the Seinfeld Test

Would the product eliminate the plot of an episode? (Google maps, cell phones, paypal, battery packs)

Good tech.

Would the product inspire new Seinfeld plots? (NFTs, AI chatbots, crypto currency, blindboxes, metaverse land sales)

Bad tech.
