In this galaxy cluster merger the galaxies are located in the red shaded regions with the majority of the mass. The pink region in the middle is where the gas lies. This proves the existence of a missing dark matter 😉🧪🔭 #extragalactic #cosmology

Models have been showing this major rain event for many days now. Rainfall amounts >2" are likely over the higher terrain. It will be interesting to see the measured maximum rainfall amounts.

This forecast graphic is from NOAA/Weather Prediction Center.

Our JELS paper on galaxy sizes (stellar and Halpha) and merger rates at z=6 using NB JWST data has now been accepted for publication. Congratulations @hmostevo.bsky.social 🧪🔭 #extragalactic #academicsky

Astronomers have detected a dark blob of...something, billions of light years away. It's as massive as a million Suns & it emits no detectable radiation.

It might be a clump of dark matter, revealing new details about the structure of the invisible universe. 🧪🔭

Left, our best surface brightness model of the 1.7-GHz global VLBI observation used here, which has been reconvolved with the main lobe of the interferometer’s point spread function and added to the residuals (34 μJy per beam r.m.s.). For reference, red contours show the surface brightness at 2.1 μm observed by the W. M. Keck Observatory adaptive optics system30. The positions of two low-mass perturbers are each marked with a black X. The 2 × 108 M⊙ object first detected by ref. 24 is labelled , and the 1.13 × 106 M⊙ detection reported here is labelled . The zoomed-in region shown in the right-hand two panels is indicated by the black square, which has a side length of 60 mas. Top right, detail of the bright arc around , with the colour scale modified to emphasize the gap in the arc produced by the gravitational perturbation of . Bottom right, GI corrections to the lensing convergence (expressed in units of lens-plane surface mass density), showing a compact, positive feature whose position and mass are consistent with the independent parametric modelling results for . The dashed black circle has a radius of 80 pc and the lensed emission is indicated by the black contours.

My reasoning is if aliens came down tomorrow and asked us how we’d been getting on with discovery it would be embarrassing if we didn’t know much.

It's that time of year when my alma mater asks me for money when they have far more money than my own institution (factor of 300 in value of the respective endowments). They also used to ask me for it when I worked for them which seemed a little cheeky. #academicsky

Yeh my students who use LLMs for the short essay style questions in coursework always do badly as I want them to talk around the specific points Ive taught them. Not what gpt thinks.

Inner child extremely excited about a crewed mission to the moon as soon as February!
Outer adult painfully aware of the NASA funding cuts and their impact on wide-ranging and incredibly important scientific research.
Anyone else simultaneously thrilled and downcast about this news?🔭🛰️

⏰ Start your countdown clock for the exact moment of the autumn #equinox, 19:19 (UK) 22nd Sept, when the Northern hemisphere and Southern hemisphere are equally illuminated. Today the day length in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿Scotland is ~the same as in 🇳🇿New Zealand 🤓🧪🔭

The main diagram shows the Earth's annual rotation around the Sun, surrounded by a zodiacal scale that gives the names, symbols and images of the signs of the zodiac. The seasons and the positions of the equinoxes and solstices are marked. Text at the corners describes the Zodiac and the Earth, and a longer text at the bottom explains the Phenomena of the Seasons.

She clearly doesn’t understand how the oil and gas market works… or is advocating for nationalising an oil company which seems highly unlikely 😂

Yes, looking at old documentaries, it's pure content for the whole episode... none of this: here's what I'm going to tell you, here's what I've just told you, such that an hour documentary is only 20mins of new material.
