The Trump administration has reacted to a small scale lone wolf attack by in DC announcing a sweeping collective punishment, using the organs of government to heap blame on partisan rivals, and potentially dissuading anyone from collaborating with US forces abroad for a generation.

This is a long and insightful thread about “competitive depravity” that animates the ultra-wealthy, and the pathology that afflicts billionaires and drug addicts alike.
Keep forgetting to say the most important thing:

These guys' fundamental glitch--whether we're talking abt Trump or the broligarchs or any of the intl rogue's gallery of celebs, CEOs & heads of state who appeared in the Panama Papers & other leaks--is that they can ONLY get off on transgression.
On the overlap btw offshore use & sexual exploitation of women here's a snippet:

Donald Trump--who appears 1000s of times in offshore leaks & bragged abt his tax evasion--is not the only rich guy whose hobbies include cheating with their friends' wives. Per an offshore wealth mgr I interviewed:

"a single person of this demographic may have committed a crime, therefore we must punish the entire demographic" is a policy response you may recognize from fascist governments dedicated to ethnic cleansing elsewhere.
It didn’t even take 6 hours.

a thing about immigrants is that every single one of them is a person, a full human being, no exceptions, whether deemed by this vicious state to be "peaceful" or not smh
This is the scandal. Trump isn’t targeting dangerous people. He’s targeting peaceful immigrants. Almost exclusively.

"Dogs don't bark at parked cars" is an all-time great line
"My mentor always tells me, 'Kim, dogs don’t bark at parked cars." They’re coming after critical race theory, 1619, intersectionality because these ideas mobilized people. They gave them the language to actually articulate what they were seeing with their own eyes," says Kimberlé Crenshaw.

Box of stained index cards never let me down.
NEW: AI “recipe slop” is overrunning search and social. Food creators say Google’s AI Overviews and glossy fake food pics are drowning out real, tested recipes — collapsing traffic and setting home cooks up for disaster, especially this Thanksgiving.

The military has a duty to refuse unlawful orders, but Congress has a duty to remove from office a president and secretary who would issue such orders. There is something off about members of Congress talking about the former while refusing to say the latter, the part that's actually their job here.

They truly believe this! Like when they arrest a noncitizen who committed a crime years ago and has been out of prison for a decade, they put out a press release claiming they saved the public from a serious threat, even if the person has been law-abiding for years and is a random ex-con doing well.
To paraphrase what an ICE field director said at a Texas hiring event earlier this year: what makes ICE different from other law enforcement officers is that we catch criminals "before" a crime is committed.
NEW: ICE has finally released post-shutdown detention data. The latest data reveals that a full 40%(!) of people arrested in the interior and held in ICE detention have no criminal record; no criminal charges or prior convictions. That is up from just 4% when Trump took office.

do you have any idea how much you have to piss somebody off to make them change their gauge
#Finland will begin to #Russia - proof its rail network, integrate with EU train infrastructure.

The Finnish government has announced the conversion of its rail network from Russian gauge (1,524 mm) to European standard (1,435 mm).

The application of Trump’s name and likeness to the office of the Presidency is one of the signals that tells me he’s not going quietly into that good night.

We’re long past the point where the journalistically responsible thing isn’t to pass along this question to Mamdani but to turn to the people asking it and ask them why.
answer is great but also it's telling that the guy who's been saying this since day 1 has to answer about whether he's an antisemite for 5 min every interview while the same people grin vacantly at the jewish space lasers lady and call her a brave warrior
WELKER: What is your message to Jewish New Yorkers who feel you won't be tough enough in your response to antisemitism?

MAMDANI: That I am looking forward to being the next mayor and fulfilling the commitment I've made to Jewish New Yorkers to not only protect them but to celebrate and cherish them

Lumping them together as “AI” gives readers the impression that a single class of tool is discerning novel protein structures, teasing subtle patterns out of mountains of LHC data, writing a student’s History 101 paper, and arguing a ketamine-addled billionaire could post up Shaq in his prime. No.

+”GenAI” when you mean audio or visuals generated by a computer trained on human efforts.

There are so many areas where ML and neural networks are providing fantastic human good. Let’s not frothy-mob ourselves out of those gains.
Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪

This is weirdly accurate.
I don't deny that dogs can sometimes be quite lovely but what I will say is I don't trust their opinions. If a cat recommended me an album it had bought, I'd totally check it out. If a dog did the same, I'd promise to listen to the album, out of politeness, with no intention of actually doing so
