It’s crazy how they can just start chucking law-abiding people in prison and change societal expectations around that, so that many people just say “welp, that’s just a thing that happens here now (and it ain’t me)!”

Go, a college student, has a dependent visa (her mother, an Episcopal minister, is here on a religious worker visa), which doesn't expire until Dec. But when she tried to renew it early, ICE nabbed her and sent her halfway across the US to a detention center.

“Bodies generally fit together, it’s people who don’t.” A beautiful reading last night by @tomasmmoniz.bsky.social at @mcwconf.bsky.social in the quaint Crown Hall. #mendocino #mcwc25

Eating My Ex
I swiped a fingerful of his remains while no one was looking and laid it on my tongue like acid. I wanted to keep a part of him for myself, to integrate his corpse into my living body. I would regr…

“We never end up with the book we began writing.” Wise words from @pegalfordpursell.bsky.social at @mcwconf.bsky.social that feel especially relevant as my project shapeshifts thanks to stellar feedback from my workshop crew. #mcwc25 #mendocino #books #writing #thelostartist

One was beaten unconscious. Others were covered in bruises, struggling to walk or vomiting blood. Another said he’d been sexually assaulted.

These are the stories of 16 former detainees who were deported to El Salvador’s mega prison.

A DHS spokesperson defended the detainment, accusing Sen. Padilla of failing to properly identify himself during Sec. Kristi Noem's press conference.

But multiple videos show Padilla clearly identifying himself as a senator.
Sen. Padilla pushed to ground, handcuffed for demanding DHS not lie
Forcibly removing a sitting US senator, as they opposed the president's immigration policy, is a part of a broader slide.

In my latest piece for @atlasobscura.com, I step inside the world of the illegal plant trade—the fourth largest black market after the ones for humans, drugs and arms. I learned so much working on this piece. #berkeley #plants #blackmarket #botanical #cycad www.atlasobscura.com/articles/pla...

The Gen Zers I interviewed were also into thrifting and shop new only for certain basics and layers.

According to my sources, it's getting better—the hem allowance on pants, for example, is much bigger. And I talked to a lot of Gen Z who are buying it again (some of those voices are included in the story). We'll see if it sticks.

I just got a public death threat from a few folks who noticed I am doing a library event to talk about my career and my books. They called me all the familiar names, then “I won’t be sad if someone shoots her in the face.” And a woman’s reply, “Right between the eyes.”

I am a children’s author.

Three years ago, I did a deep dive on Gap falling apart at the seams. Today I have a story out with the inverse narrative: The brand is poised to make a comeback, thanks to crisp marketing, Parker Posey and Zac Posen. Will it last? #SanFrancisco #gap #sfgate www.sfgate.com/local/articl...

Congratulations! As a former academic, I've always been curious what it's like to write for The Conversation. As a Slavist, my field was decidedly *not* high-profit publishing, so it's fascinating to get a peek into the sciences.
