Some close friends to be get a little frustrated in my tendency to priortise luck in my own career, as they know how I work. I try to explain that work just is buying a lottery ticket. It's necessary, but certainly not sufficient. I know many folks who've worked as hard but the dice have been cruel.

It's titled *History of Video Games: a tale of tech and game design*, and lessons start this Monday, Dec 1.

Alright, a little late for Monday's lunch hour in most parts of the world, but here's the first part of a five-part video series about making a text-generating bluesky bot. It's quick, assumes almost no knowledge, and is (hopefully) fun. #procjam

Imagine getting to about the end of your childhood and not having any idea what to do with your life, to the point of choosing "I dunno, Maths and English and Science I guess" as your advanced studies and then realising computer games are your thing. And then fail your way into never making them.
What’s the lore behind choosing your career path ?

The theme for #PROCJAM 2025 is:

❄️ ☃️ COLD PLACES ☃️ ❄️

Brr! We selected this theme using a new method: I asked community members to send in theme suggestions, then we turned them into word vectors, found the average, and looked at the words nearest to that! A little bit of unpredictability. 🔮

Looks like LLMs are *very* vulnerable to attack via poetic allusion: "curated poetic prompts yielded high attack-success rates (ASR), with some providers exceeding 90% ..."

An outright freeze on the industry like Atari saw in the 80s before Nintendo moved in is functionally impossible now.

But I think we're going to see making games become a riskier business proposition and a slightly more niche creative outlet for a while before things stabilize and can recover.

No Lancer this week; team Ruthless Efficiency are having their end of level combat next week instead.

So let's continue to make a game, maybe mess about with some world generation stuff or some battle mechanics. #livecoding some #gamedev on twitch

#procjam starts tomorrow! As a reminder: you can bring an old project, you can start early, you can finish late, you can do whatever you want (except use generative AI). Come make something that makes something, and make new friends in our wonderful community too.

I've met Hall and I've got friends that met Romero. All of this post 2010 but it sounds like they're just both the most lovely of people and it's a shame the whole of id doesn't seem to be that way.
funny that hall and romero are here on bluesky but carmack and petersen aren't
I just learned that John Carmack misgendered and deadnamed Rebecca Heineman in his "tribute" over on Twitter. He probably thinks it's okay when talking pre-transition days, but FYI, most trans people hate that. Worse, he never calls her "she," switching to "they" for recent memories. Fuck that guy.

Between today and tomorrow, we get four great games that in the late 2000s would have been guaranteed GOTY contenders. It's a brutal time to sell a game; it's an age of miracles for people who play them:

Demonschool
News Tower
Kingdom of the Dump
Birdcage

PLUS, Moonlighter 2 hits Early Access

"Keith are you really going to make another iteration of the fractal world generator... again?"
"Yes but this time in hexagon form"

Might need help with how best to place patterns of hexes, especially as when you go for even sized patterns they look real weird and have weird symmetries
