Being commercially successful requires:

1) Skill
2) Luck
3) Help

The quantities vary, famous person by famous person. But the ones who turn out to be shits are always the ones who cannot accept the role of 2) and 3). They think it was entirely due to 1).
They don't have to be creative - it also happened to Noel Edmonds 😁
My interest in this is having investigated an actual scientific explanation of magic for thirty years (see pinned skeet) and it is, as you say, a common reaction. RAW refers to the danger as "navigating Chapel Perilous"
