We become embodied exhibits of moral rot. And the genuine moral depravity of the cruel systems we live in gets displaced onto our bodies and minds. As with, for example, this dissertation I'm working with for the first chapter of my book: 5/

Well, I have in my researches today found an ethics dissertation that straight out SAYS we're pathologizing distraction with diagnoses like ADHD when we should treat it as a moral failing, and, well, thank you for saying the quiet part out loud so I don't have to, but also kindly go fuck yourself.

Also, it and its fellow neurodivergences (notably ADHD) are disabilities whose associated behaviors are DEEPLY entwined with regnant narratives of who's a good person or a bad one. 1/

It's no worse than any other disabilities. But for years, it was billed as one of the most tragic outcomes possible for kids. It was seen as a symptom of schizophrenia or this condition that drove children into a catatonic state. The fact mothers were blamed for it made the stigma worse.

I don’t exactly how to phrase this, but like… is autism that bad???? Like, why is it such a source of fear??? Of course there are challenges but you can be autistic and have a rich, fulfilling life! Many people do! I don’t understand the preoccupation.

Azeen Ghorayshi at the NYT has moved on from going after trans people and is now pushing the leasing question that autism diagnoses are too common because of its expansion of it to a spectrum.

Some bad news for STEM PhDs today regarding the eligibility for one of the biggest fellowships—only first-year graduate students and undergrads are able to apply to the NSF GRFP, no second-years. This will hurt a lot of graduate training and research, especially at less wealthy schools
kholob.bsky.social
Haven’t had any time to update this lately, but with fellowships season and a new academic year upon us, take a look for yourself and/or your students.

I’ve put together a list of funding sources for graduate students in biblical studies and early Christianity. Most of these are only available to students in the U.S. but many of them don’t have citizenship requirements. docs.google.com/document/d/1...

Conference announcement/call for papers! You’ll note that there’s no theme beyond “new research on apocryphal Christian literature.” We truly just want to hear about whatever interests you most in apocryphal Christian literature right now. More info here: www.nasscal.com/meetings/

Good recs for a _cultural_ history of "the alpha"? From evobio to its reception in pop culture, how ideologies about "biologically innate" "leadership" structures everyday social life for _humans_, and back to how evobio studies pack animals?

Especially today when writing and articulation is a dying skill, we need to TEACH STUDENTS HOW TO DO IT, preferably with empathy
kholob.bsky.social
Yes there are students who are just tying to get prestigious connections, but it can be an incredibly vulnerable experience to ask for help, and it’s dehumanizing to assume they aren’t really trying. Even if the student is bad at articulating something, that doesn’t mean they won’t get better at it.
kholob.bsky.social
It really disturbs me that so many people in higher education seem to think that students are trying to get one over on them or wasting their time because they aren’t strong enough at particular skills.

Newsom has backstabbed trans people and homeless people repeatedly, but you’re fine with that because you’re not affected. People like you demand one-way coalitions. Morally and strategically bankrupt.
johngpettus.bsky.social
So many people on the far left are not willing to do even basic coalitional politics (like not backstabbing someone fighting your enemy) to fight fascism.

Publication day for a book that Matthew and I spent six years on, anguished over, fought for, rewrote twice, and nearly abandoned. I hope it proves useful in continuing important conversations about the ancient world and about the societies we choose to build today.

Science is effectively dead in the US for at least the next 3½ years, and will then take another several years to even get started again. Canceled research doesn’t just uncancel itself, and scientists who find opportunity elsewhere won’t just come flocking back.

The damage is generational.

All scientific grant funding must now be approved by a political appointee and "demonstrably advance the President's policy priorities."

I wonder where innovation will happen in the future? It won't be in the US
