👋🏻 to anyone here who is a new follower (via starter pack or otherwise): a mini-introduction.

In my research endeavours, I have studied how music/sound has functioned in everyday contexts during recent (mainly 20th century) Finnish history.

The war will end when Russia stops fighting. Therefore, pressure has to be put on Russia, so that they stop believing that they will win. Why is that so hard to understand?

It's weird to not only have lived through an information revolution but also now living through its undoing, all within less than a generation.
Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

Finland uses “Russia-gauge” rails. They are going to move to European compatible rail gauge for their own resilience.

This is what we should be thinking about for moving to open social away from American platforms: it should come with significant spending commitments & is absolutely necessary.

Musk turned on a feature on X that showed country of origin.

He disabled it a couple hours later when it was revealed how many MAGA accounts aren't in the U.S.

Foreign bot disinformation machines exposed.

Seems like Twitter could have done that feature 15 years ago & we wouldn't be here today.

This is not a peace plan. It is a proposal that weakens Ukraine and divides America from Europe, preparing the way for a larger war in the future. In the meantime, it benefits unnamed Russian and American investors, at the expense of everyone else.

The only other way to play this is to appear and then just read the list of forbidden words.
This week, I withdrew from a speaking engagement at a public university because they sent me a list of prohibited “words & concepts.” I will not humor this censorship. It does a disservice to the stories I’m discussing & the audience, who deserve unfettered access to information & conversation.

This was predictable.
In Finland, these types of messages have been viewed as extreme and ridiculous. But they are already there and, I believe, soon to be pushed towards the mainstream by far right influencers.
Last week's elections showed the power of women voters, who delivered decisive wins for Democrats across the nation. Now, there's a surge in calls to repeal women's right to vote. Could this radical Christian nationalist agenda splinter the MAGA movement or pull them further toward extremism?

China's economy has grown by ~5% in the last year, so this comprehensively debunks the idea (again) that emissions are tied to growth. So yes, faster progress needed, but this is how you turn the corner.
