I think one thing people outside Minnesota don't understand is that after Good and Pretti were killed by feds while observing, the most normal people you could imagine have made peace with the fact that they could be next, and they are still out there because they say it's the right thing to do.

Animal tracks in snow. There are small paw prints and big paw prints from the same animal. The small ones are round, the bigger ones are wedge shaped and much longer. Both front and back prints show toe beans.

I've read a lot of slanted papers from tech company employees about the 'benefits' of AI, but the fact that Anthropic themselves have put out such a cautious paper should be a big cause for alarm for people who are trading learning for prompting

And it doesn't improve productivity!

Abstract Al assistance produces significant productivity gains across professional domains, particularly for novice workers. Yet how this assistance affects the development of skills required to effectively supervise AI remains unclear. Novice workers who rely heavily on AI to complete unfamiliar tasks may compromise their own skill acquisition in the process. We conduct randomized experiments to study how developers gained mastery of a new asynchronous programming library with and without the assistance of Al. We find that AI use impairs conceptual understanding, code reading, and debugging abilities, without delivering significant efficiency gains on average. Participants who fully delegated coding tasks showed some productivity improvements, but at the cost of learning the library. We identify six distinct AI interaction patterns, three of which involve cognitive engagement and preserve learning outcomes even when participants receive AI assistance. Our findings suggest that Al-enhanced productivity is not a shortcut to competence and AI assistance should be carefully adopted into workflows to preserve skill formation - particularly in safety-critical domains.

A disabled man named Wael Tarabishi died last week after ICE abducted his father and full time caregiver.

Wael begged for his dad’s release.

He told ICE that losing his caregiver would kill him.

His father didn’t even get to say goodbye and has been denied the right to attend the funeral.

They weren't interested in eyesight, but used the eye to study circulation and endothelial function in the brain. They call it a "accessible surrogate of cerebral microvascular function"
