Everything that makes Aotearoa New Zealand unique is related to Māori culture. Welcome to the country, that's a pōwhiri. We are gonna thrash you at sport, that's a haka. Traditional meals, that's a hāngī. Matariki that's our New Year

If you don't like Māori stuff maybe you're in the wrong country?
Pluribus Ep 1: Fascinating. Somewhat belaboured, but great concept and dark humor.

Pluribus Ep 2: Dear god make the boredom and the pithy jokes stop.

I truly have no patience for the lugribious pace of prestige TV.

Yay Lesbians, though!

So ... the government just forced us all to have referendums on *existing* Māori wards because Local Communities Deserve Choice, but now they're unilaterally abolishing our regional councils because they don't like the Choices we made?

I will not volunteer to mod a subreddit.

I do not have a single second in my day to mod a subreddit.

I have no interest in the drama that comes from modding a subreddit.

I would need to be paid to put in the effort it takes to mod a subreddit.

(sometimes I need to repeat these mantras)

I remain on FB to I keep track of 100s of people I care about in the US.

There are a few highly educated older friends of mine (~25yrs older than me) who do nothing but share AI-generated fake-but-potentially-credible content.

Fake political reporting, scientific discoveries, music news, & more!

Journalist challenge: Use “Machine Learning” when you mean machine learning and “LLM” when you mean LLM. Ditch “AI” as a catch-all term, it’s not useful for readers and it helps companies trying to confuse the public by obscuring the roles played by different technologies. 🧪

It brings me so much joy to see the entire NZ timeline filled with Secret Santa posts again after our off year.

(I do not participate, because gifts cause me nuclear levels of anxiety both as a giver and receiver, but I love watching other people get gifts!)

Other times I've been unwell the past 2yr (oof, what a 2yrs) I've been able to focus on exercise. When I couldn't exercise I always had playing guitar.

This time I can't do most exercise AND I can't play guitar.

This is already the longest I've gone without playing guitar maybe in my entire life 😬

The coolest thing about going to Hand Therapy, other than the hand therapy, is they give me FUN TOYS AND GADGETS.

Let's bring back giving adults stickers and finger puppets for going to medical appointments.

Oh, so I should stop using em dashes because of AI since LLMs are DESIGNED to emulate well-structured professional writing LIKE MINE?

I gave up my addiction to inappropriate use of semi-colons & ellipses. Em dashes are my approved therapeutic alternative. They'll pry them from my cold, dead fingers

Miss Piggy AI posts will catch a block.

Come on, people.

Now it is OFFICALLY official: I have been advised by an actual doctor that I should not attempt the triathlon in 10 days.

Alas, looks like I'll have to wait until 2026 to knock this one off my bucket list.

On the bright side, more time to get faster at the running portion!

Excelsior!

I am in a waiting room, which means I am experiencing my first 10m of live NZ broadcast television this year.

Broadcast television! So retro!

Watching a bit of ALIEN: EARTH to let my mind crawl all over something fictional after a tense day, and damn the editing is AMAZING.

I keep pausing to reflect on the cuts and the framing.

This story about the sudden halt in production of the American Penny is deliciously funny.

As someone who is pretty far left and pretty terminally online, I am so fucking tired of terminally online leftists and their constant purity tests.

Awesome. Great. You win. Don't enjoy ANYTHING, EVER. All content is MORALLY COMPROMISED.

Maybe get better at making art, since you can't consume any.

Day 17 post-injury: Still waiting on someone to read my radiology to diagnose my injury.

Imagine if this was life-threatening instead of just health- and livelihood-threatening.

But sure let's spend $4B on a fucking bonus tunnel to save a bunch of ministers 10m on their commute to the airport.

Willis cancelled IREX because the final cost was going to be $3bn

Ferries that are critical for goods transport.

$4bn for a tunnel so politicians can get to the airport faster? And that’s before the costs escalate as they always do.

Sounds pretty dumb to me.

David did a massive amount of good with years of monitoring and making accessible NZ's COVID data.

I massively credit his easily understood approach to data for moving our family out of an early phase of unspecific COVID panic and into our lasting data-driven decision making about relative risk.
After some few years of quietly updating it, I have discontinued the NZ covid status page I was maintaining. PHFS are still publishing wastewater data, but the Ministry of Health are not (they are publishing a graphic summary in Power BI). To check trends these days use poops.nz for the leading...

This is the first day since my training injury that my body has felt *relatively* normal except for doing very specific tasks/motions.

Very happy to be moving past the acute injury phase and into physical therapy to begin my recuperation to get back to regular function, as much as possible.

Sorry you had to wait 10 months for your cancer surgery – a politician needed to save 10 minutes getting to the airport.
$4 BILLION to save 'up to 10 minutes' during peak traffic. Fucking hell - imagine what that $4B could do for housing, education, health, etc, in Aotearoa.
