He was planning to teach remotely in his present job. I haven't seen anything about Rutgers trying to fire him. And Spain is way cheaper than the US, which is why US citizens with modest retirement incomes are moving there.

The amount of money they're seeking just stopped me cold, given their relatively privileged position. And I have family stories about people sneaking across borders to escape fascism. Emphasis on sneaking. So this just feels... odd.

Agree 💯. My mom's trauma as a Holocaust survivor was the lens through which she rejected the Israeli occupation, and taught me to oppose all state power that causes suffering.

I agree. But people need to know police have been deeply infiltrated by white supremacist organizations - an open secret w/lots of data behind it - and, as you say, it would take an extraordinarily effort to create a branch of law enforcement willing to risk their lives to defy the regime.

For better or worse, when I got shingles in the early aughts, the only medical response was sending me home with a giant bottle of Vicodin for the pain. I had to supply my own white wine.
