In all seriousness, this seems to be a government endorsement of the techbro belief that AI can replace scientists and that you can just ask it for the cure to cancer and it will have it by Wednesday.

That's not how the universe works.

Hot take: this is both logistically and morally the same as if those cars were taxis or other private vehicles.

The fact that they're self-driving isn't interesting in this context.
Waymo privatized another public street:

Chanel approaching 4th, San Francisco

Possibly queued for a Billie Eilish show at Chase Center ~half mile away.

The light rail train on 4th seen passing in front of this roboherd has more passenger capacity than all of them combined.

this is because people want to turn their cities into museums of their own past. they don't want the future. they want to turn into dust reflecting on how awesome they used to be
It’s really incredible how we decided that cities should no longer be physically shaped by the industries that carry them. I wrote this about the tech industry’s lack of a built legacy in Manhattan over a decade ago, but it could be written 10x over in the Bay Area newyorkyimby.com/2014/12/how-...

With strict limits on growth in Midtown South and on the Brooklyn waterfront, tech giants are leaving little architecture behind for future generations.

Nothing in the city, but Bayers Lake is already starting to ice up.

I heard a car spin out as I biked by.
About to ride out to Spryfield and I feel I should ask... black ice???

There shouldn't at this temperature but I'm a nervous nelly on the road.
