One thing that AI author article really crystallizes for me is how much the “they’re crap books” portion of any discussion of both the creation and consumption of crap books gets glossed over because books & reading have this sheen of inherent virtue to them

You know, it’s just possible to feel really bad about the violent deaths of Israeli Jews, the genocide in Palestine and the deaths of Australian Jews all while being neither anti-Semitic or Islamophobic.

Somehow that has become impossible for the political class.

It's 7:15am on a school day. After doing literally nothing all weekend, the 8yo has just opened a new box of Lego.

Some free advice for copyeditors and proofreaders: If an author refers to a named person with the pronouns "they," "them," "theirs," consider the possibility that MAYBE THE AUTHOR DID IT FOR A REASON AND YOU SHOULD LEAVE THEM INSTEAD OF CHANGING EVERY SINGLE ONE. #AmEditing

So it turns out the only way to get Aussie media to acknowledge that the ndis is fucked is if the media is trying to justify murdering disabled children, this country’s news editors are truly evil

Tickets to Paddington the Musical are sold out so far in advance that I'd have to pay between AU$450 and AU$700 to get two seats together during the time we're in London.

40 years ago today, we lost seven heroes aboard Challenger. As an astronaut who commanded the space shuttle after this tragedy, I think about them often. Their courage pushed the boundaries of exploration. Today, we remember their sacrifice and the legacy they left behind.

terrific new Ben Taub piece — it cracks a long-cold case of infanticide; it's a bombshell for maternal health, child protection & opiate toxicology protocols; it exposes the Lancet’s scandalous indifference to validity of what it publishes — it should make noise

Man the implication that somewhere deep in our brain there is a “see tiny people all over the place” button and a mushroom can press it, that’s deeply unsettling.
With most psychedelic drugs, you never know what you're going to get. But this mysterious mushroom from China - without fail - causes users to hallucinate tiny people: crawling up walls, popping out from under furniture and marching under doors. www.bbc.com/future/artic...
'They saw them on their dishes when eating': The mushroom making people hallucinate dozens of tiny humans
Only recently described by science, the mysterious mushrooms are found in different parts of the world, but they give people the same exact visions.

Although I'm familiar with Gen-Z speak thanks to being terminally online, my first real-world encounter with it through the phrases 'we love a self-aware king' (about the 8yo) and 'it's giving Picasso' (about my dress) from a school holiday camp leader have left me a little flummoxed.

While I wish Bluesky had a 'turn off reposts' option, I really like its 'hide post' function for when stupid/annoying/infuriating posts gain traction.

eg: Today I don't have to see that AI guy's stupid face every time someone dunks on him for panicking about people not using AI.

Why editing costs "so much."
The editing of 80,000 words typically takes:
100 hours structural/ developmental
64 hours copyediting OR stylistic/line
36 hours proofreading
To pay a poverty wage for that time, that would cost roughly $9,000. To work with a coveted, credentialled editor, —1/3
