One of the best days of the year
For those who read me internationally, today is opening day for #SecretSantaAoNZ (a national volunteer coordinated gift exchange effort via Bluesky and (extended this time to) Mastodon, where people are assign to be secret santa for another member of the network).

If you're not in Aotearoa New Zealand, but would like some lil sprinkles of joy today, look at the posts tagged #secretsantaaonz. This is an entirely volunteer-run gift exchange, where hundreds of people buy / assemble / make gifts for someone they've been assigned. The gifts NEVER fail ❤️
It's not even 7 am and I've already been smiling for 10 mins, for it is #secretsantaaonz opening day! I am wandering home from the gym while stalking the feed. As usual, I am super impressed by everyone's gifts. I promise I'll open mine once I've showered and gotten dressed (in ~1hr) - EXCITED!

Now that it's public: RIP FluTracking, which I understand only cost $50k per year to administer, yet provided incredibly valuable and irreplaceable information on levels of influenza-like-illness.
What an utterly dim decision.

One of these things puts money in the pockets of consultants and the other is a public health necessity for plebs
The government is prepared to spend who knows how much on an entirely unnecessary amalgamation of ministries, but is steadily nickle and diming away small and useful programmes like the FluTracking survey.
#nzpol
Min of Health has decided not to continue with the FluTracking survey each week from next year.

What a ridiculous decision. The cost savings must be minimal

What are our taxes actually used for if not things like public health?

You can probably find that down the back of Luxon's couch! #nzpol

I’m actually a bit gutted about FluTracking ending. It was an important part of the COVID response and made me feel part of a team; I dutifully did my survey every Monday morning. And now this excellent crowdsourced science tool has been casually axed, yesterday it turns out. info.flutracking.net

"30 or 40 trips a month"

That wouldn't cover getting to work for a disabled worker, it definitely wouldn't cover a social life and work.

With this and the stories pouring in about Rob Reiner and Michele Singer, we are seeing and hearing about the full human spectrum from kindness and generosity to cruelty and callous disregard for the humanity of others.
Ahmed al Ahmed, the man who tackled one of the Bondi killers, became an Australian citizen 3 years ago.

His deed was "his way of conveying his gratitude for staying in Australia, for being granted citizenship."

He took 5 bullets, and fears he'll lose his left arm.

It's up to us, U.S. citizens living here in the imperial core, to stop it. Nobody is coming to save us. Not the U.N., not the ICJ. It's us or it's nobody.
