Everybody is already complaining about this but it is kind of very frustrating to hear on November 14th that Matthews "could come back in a couple of days from now" but "it could be as long as a week" and then instead he doesn't play until at least November 28th

It appears the Grit vs Skill debate has resurfaced and as a retired veteran of the Corsi Wars I think wisdom should teach us to have more nuanced discourse. For example, 2 things can be true: The Leafs are equally lacking in skill AND balls. Bemoaning one doesn’t mitigate the impact of the other.

A rebuild is incredibly unlikely to result in better high-end talent than is currently on the roster.
Leafs’ best chance at playoff success is hot goaltending + 34 going supernova. I have been bearish on this core for quite some time, but they’ve backed themselves into this being their only path.

The Leafs are drawing dead this year and they should be gunning to keep their top 5 protected pick. The only untouchables should be Knies, Cowan and maybe Nylander. There is so much parity this year there are hardly any sellers. Take advantage of that.
I’m not expecting the Leafs to be smart enough to start the rebuild. But they should be smart enough to punt on the season.
