ICE reportedly plans to spend $38.3 billion turning warehouses into detention centers.

Let’s translate what $38.3 BILLION actually means in human terms.

Not abstractions. Real impact. Thread:

Again, you can either be the "I'm just a moderate, empirical popularist following the data on public opinion" guy, or you can be the "political scientists are unrepentant partisan hacks whose research should come with warning labels" guy. But really, you have to choose.
I regret to inform you that Ezra Douthglesias is at it again

This is the guy who believes political scientists are unrepentant partisan hacks, whose research should come with warning labels (bsky.app/profile/mcop...), just inventing numbers to try & counter two of the best scholars in the field:
We have no idea where Yglesias got his numbers but they’re wrong. This debate has for so long been plagued by numbers basically pulled out of thin air

Republicans do this all the time to deny people their civil rights, saying "Democrats can't do it though, even if it's to protect someone's civil rights" is part of how we got in this mess to begin with
Could the governor order the state police to not become involved? Technically, yes as KSP is an executive branch agency. But, the governor interfering in legal processes undertaken at the county level by an elected prosecutor and properly appointed grand jury is sticky business...

Andy Beshear could simply order the state police not to be prosecuting women who have miscarriages!?
These two Kentucky cases follow known criminalization patterns, per @pregnancyjust.bsky.social data.

*arrests after seeking medical care
*charges for handling of fetal remains using laws meant for other purposes
*people criminalized are disproportionately low income
Second Kentucky Woman in 6 Weeks Charged With Homicide After Pregnancy Loss
Both women were criminalized after they sought medical care, one for a miscarriage and one for self-managed abortion.

The GOAT of his era. Just a remarkably charismatic, and yes, eloquent force for good.
Yes it’s Valentine’s Day. But it’s also the chosen birthday of Frederick Douglass who was born in 1818 on a plantation in Talbot County, Maryland. He escaped from slavery & rose to become the most eloquent and forceful voice for the abolition of slavery & for Black voting rights in the U.S.

The one thing that is always consistent throughout history is how desperately the wealthy work to control information.
YouTube has removed the channel of pro-Palestinian political commentator Guy Christensen, a U.S.-based activist known for short videos discussing the U.S.-backed Israeli genocide in Gaza. He had 50K+ subscribers and tells Drop Site he avoided discussing Hamas to prevent this outcome.

She really should take a swing at a presidential run. She gets these things in a way that so many don't and she can articulate the importance of allies and addressing the hypocrisies that have marred the Western order for decades.
AOC: "I think we have to recognize that we are in a new day and in a new time. But that does not mean that the majority of Americans are ready to walk away from a rules-based order, and that we're ready to walk away from our commitment to democracy."

I feel like we were so close six years ago on getting the normies to tip over into progressive dismantling of these fascist institutions and then one phrase got weaponized against us and it's been all downhill since.
I need folks to understand this. The idea that local police forces will intervene at scale against ICE is a utopian fantasy totally disconnected from how policing has always worked
Police departments across the US are quietly leveraging school district security cameras to assist Donald Trump’s mass immigration enforcement campaign, an investigation by @the74.bsky.social reveals.
