I'm planning the annual charity teach-athon for Romancing the Gothic.

GOTHS FOR BREAKFAST is a full day of classes and workshops (more or less related to the Gothic) raising money for @magicbreakfastuk.bsky.social to feed hungry kids!

Looking for volunteer speakers! Get in touch!

It's not quite a cancel-cancel but I've been painfully side-eyeing New Model Army since I found out they commission all their art from a prominent TERF. The patch is off the jacket at any rate.
Question for the Skyline: What was your HARDEST "cancel"?? Like the actor/singer/athlete that was the hardest to drop.

I feel like it's always people I don't fw getting canceled so it's never really a loss.

The hardest one was maybe TI because I actually liked multiple albums by him.

The UK creative industries — which contributed £125 billion to the economy in 2024 and supported 2.4 million jobs — are being destroyed by an AI sector that... contributed just £11 billion in the same year and supported only 85,000 jobs.

Me, going through old zines: Wow I sure like to write about the undead and relics, huh?

@liminalitea.bsky.social, behind me, hunched over their art desk: I have drawn *so many skeletons*.

“Who’s this?”
“This is Temalthus. He’s just been martyred.”
“Oh, dear. Nasty business.”
One of the joys of going back over old work is remembering I wrote a monastic flash zine with a novice having to tie tiny mitres onto chickens and two saints getting utterly sick of a martyr as they try to offer him tea*

The issue with writing a lot of monastic fantasy is having to remember the important difference between "lying prostrate" and "lying prostate".

Using gen. A.I. to make slop imagery to go with any anti-fascist statement isn't any sort of flex as it was developed and promoted by the billionaires pushing fascism.
Just fucking stop using it.

For fucks sake, again with the apple/patreon bullshit. I have to move to monthly billing and fuck me over www.patreon.com/posts/148395...

This is all stupid bullshit but I remain pretty disgusted at how things like marriage and having children are treated like Xbox achievements instead of actually loving and caring for someone else. Yeah I’m going to work 70 hours a week but definitely need a spouse, her name is Beth or something idk

As a PhD of Medieval English monks, this is an entirely accurate reading of Viking history
A couple of weeks ago I chatted with a kid who didn't want to read a book about the vikings because they were "too harsh". Today he came back to the library. Final verdict is that the vikings were too violent and he only liked the end of the book where they went away.

Thanks Gree_, those were great questions!

Since people seemed into him as a concept, I'm going to promote my Fr Marcellus novella By The Blood where Marcellus has to convince a town that his ward is not a vampire, while fending off a vampire coven's attempts to recruit her

By the Blood

Ursula's new governor, the mysterious Fr Marcellus, must defend her from accusations of vampirism. He knows they're false. He should know - he's a vampire himself. But the stakes soon rise when the undead also take interest in Ursula.

I said nothing. The enormity of my choice hit home as my darkness cackled.

"What good is power," it whispered again, "if you have nothing else?"

Alone, with my darkness, I wept, with no one ever to hear.

#HorrorWritersChat
Gnarled hands grasp the thrumming earth around you. Void-coloured eyes behold you.

“Embrace me, and my power, you shall have.”

You grasp the dagger in the skull. You do not waver.

“They killed your kindness,” your darkness whispered. “And now, all you have is me.” Continue it.

Sticking with Fr Marcellus, he changes a lot when he embraces his darkness. Physically. Wings, claws, massive stature, the vampiric works.
Not Church-sanctioned in any way, but he's nontheless learned to turn his physical transformations to God's work, in a manner of speaking...

All the abuse. All the manipulation. All the tyranny. Blistering scabs on your soul. Your breaths rumble in the mound.

Your eyes lock with the god in front of you.

How changed do your characters become if they embrace their darkest parts? Do things change around them?

I'll focus on Fr Marcellus, ordained vampire, as I'm noodling an idea about him as we chat.

Marcellus once embraced all the sin in him. That's why he became a vampire. I find his wrestling with his darkest parts in his new vocation as a priest what makes him interesting to write

You lob the sack onto the slab. The human spills out of it – battered and broken, your dagger lodged in their skull still.

Their face. You remember everything they’ve done.

The eyes glimmer at your contempt.

What are your characters’ darkest parts? Do they embrace them?

Your destination awaits…
You drag the sack behind you through rusted grass. The fens about you hum in anticipation under the leaden sky. Your breaths billow away in frozen mists.

There it is.

The burial mound. And its pitch-black entrance.

Your destination.

Evening #HorrorWritersChat!

I'm Lawrence (she/her). I write folk/religious horror in a way I hope MR James would vibe with.

The darkest part of me? I used to have a real temper. There's a lot in the world to make you angry, especially as a queer person. I'm grateful for writing providing an outlet
The mound’s warm innards thrum as you descend. A huge, stone slab is ahead, shining with portent.

Eyes, older than words, behold you from the darkness. A question emerges.

Tell us who you are, what do you write, and what part of yourself do you consider the darkest?
