Congratulations, Nico, on such an innovative paper!! With everything going on in the world, it's important to remember that pregnancy/postpartum is a challenging stage of life. Suicide risk can be high and reseach on these experiences is absolutely critical.

Our article on perinatal self-injurious thoughts & behaviors is out today! We found that the odds of engaging in self-injurious behavior were 256% higher at 7 months postpartum relative to 3rd trimester of pregnancy, even after accounting for three risk factors. doi.org/10.1111/sltb...
Self‐Injurious Thoughts and Behaviors From Pregnancy to Postpartum: Risk Factors and Clinical Implications
Objective Suicide is a leading cause of mortality among perinatal populations. Despite increasing rates, research on this topic remains limited. This paper examined (1) change in self-injurious thou...

"If the proposal is enacted, Americans today and tomorrow will be sicker, poorer, and die younger”
an $18 Billion cut
Only 3 NIH Institutes will remain in place, and even they will have their funds markedly reduced

Cutting $20 billion to NIH over 25 years may save $500 billion on paper, but it’d end up costing $8.2 trillion in lost human health.

But NIH isn't the only thing being cut. The budget also slashes all NSF-funded science by 73 percent. NASA faces “the biggest single-year cut to NASA in history."
Donald Trump’s proposed budget would gut American science
It would slash cancer research, drug trials, space exploration, and so much more.

Harvard today, your institution tomorrow.

It's all part of the Project 2025 plan to destroy high education in America.

All leading US universities depend on federal funding and tuition dollars from international students. They severely curtailed the former. Now they're eliminating the latter.
The Trump administration on Thursday halted Harvard University’s ability to enroll international students, taking aim at a crucial funding source for the nation’s oldest and wealthiest college in a major escalation in the administration’s efforts to pressure the elite school to fall in line with the president’s agenda.

Here’s how Trump’s war on science is going. NSF funding is at the lowest level in decades. We’ll lose knowledge, generations of scientists, and US competitiveness.

The graph highlights funding trends over the years, with a specific emphasis on Biden’s term and this year (which is the lowest).

🚨 A new rule would let career scientists like NSF/NIH program officers be replaced by political appointees

Already 14,000+ public comments, deadline is Friday

📣 Comments can be short. Courts consider them—and scientists with NSF/NIH experience are especially impactful

I am not alarmist. I'm writing what needs to be said. Higher ed is on the brink of collapse and so much could be lost. College, alongside the military, is a second family for many adults. It is where people fall in love, pick sports teams, meet lifelong friends, and form a professional identity. A 🧵

My new Substack is about why immigration is good, immigrants make our culture better, & how MAGA pronatalists can't claim to want more babies while scapegoating the folks keeping our birth rate afloat. I worked really hard on this one so I hope you share it! darbysaxbe.substack.com/p/why-immigr...
The best way to boost births (that no one is talking about)
Immigrants are younger and have higher birth rates, but MAGA pronatalists want to scapegoat rather than celebrate them.

NC Court of Appeals gives over 60,000 challenged voters 15 days to prove eligibility
The majority wrote that, even though they have the authority to completely throw out the contested ballots, they decided to instead mandate a cure period for most of the challenged voters.

I was on Capitol Hill on Tuesday as part of social science advocacy day. If your students could also contact their congressperson and senators that would be a huge help, according to the legislatures. If they are not sure who that person is I can put them in touch - just DM me.

🧵Yesterday, I received notice that my #NIH grant, on the social environment, lifecourse, epigenetics & #birthoutcomes in Black families, was terminated. This grant represented a critical effort to address the ⬆️ rates of maternal & infant mortality in the US, particularly among Black mothers & babies

Letters went out to federal workers this morning stating they were fired due to poor performance. However, all employees had been rated as “exceptional” performers by their supervisors. Please keep these records and pursue wrongful termination claims. Let the lawsuits begin.
