I made a purchase from a Minnesota yarn store a few months ago. Today they sent a email which started:

This Friday, January 23rd, Minnesota has been called to observe a general strike; a day inviting people to step back from usual routines and lean into conscience, reflection, and community. (1/3)

Chicagoans are completely obnoxious about... well, everything. But especially our glorious Municipal Device. I made this pair of cufflinks for my husband a few years ago, but now I'm thinking I should do a pair with a version of the Device that goes harder.

Did you know Illinois courts are not subject to FOIA/public access to records laws? Now you do. Here's why you should care & a bill to follow:

Pretty sure the ladies who did code breaking and the "kilogirls" absolutely did their nails. They probably would have been criticized as unfeminine otherwise.
I heard last week that the physics teacher of the daughter of one of my colleagues told the daughter that girls who do their nails don’t do physics. Sigh.

So, here are the nails of an internationally leading particle physics professor. My nails.

And I fucking hate the caveats especially "NO CRIMINAL RECORD."

People who have criminal records ALSO deserve dignity. OK.

Someone ask Raja Krishnamoorthi why he thought it was OK to vote for congratulating ICE back in June
Rep. Delia Ramirez, Senate candidates Raja Khrishnamoorthi and Juliana Stratton, congressional candidates Dan Biss, Kat Abughazaleh and Patty Garcia are pushing to abolish ICE — a movement again gaining traction after the shooting death of Renee Good.

Illinois Democrats join growing calls to 'Abolish ICE'
Once a dicey political proposition, an increasing number of established Democrats are calling for a dissolution of the federal Immigration and Customs and Enforcement agency.

@jennifermach.bsky.social do you have the recipe for the pudding-filled bundt cake from the 70s/80s? Not the "tunnel of fudge" (with frosting inside) but the one with pudding?

"What do We Want, Speed or Affordability?"

We want TRAINS. We want TRAINS so we don't have to drive. We want fast, frequent trains.
As folks consider what is next after the Northern Illinois Transit Authority bill, @toddlitman.bsky.social would like to have a word: Reorient how we do transportation planning. Interestingly, he prescribes tolling new road capacity as path to affordability. www.planetizen.com/blogs/136542...
What do We Want, Speed or Affordability?
Conventional planning assumes that travellers want to save time, but evidence indicates that they usually prefer to save money. How can planning better reflect these preferences?

You know it's late on a weekend, when I'm convincing myself that if I buy a bunch of cotton, I'll make a bunch of binding and Hong Kong finish my garments from now on.

(I won't. And I'm not going to buy a bunch of cotton. But it would be fun to be that person)

People are always ready to donate to $ for food. For reasons that don't always make sense but seem v. American to me, they're less willing to donate to help make rent

But that's what families targeted by ICE in MN need right now: $ to make rent when they can't leave to work

I’m seeing posts from people (outside of MN) about how US citizens should carry their passports.

And let me say that *inside* MN, we are calmly responding to requests with: “No, I don’t have to show you any documentation.”

Because that’s how you protect everyone, regardless of immigration status.
