As a Venezuelan, this is beautiful.

It has felt for years as though the world had forgotten my country and given up.

Maduro has outright stolen elections, and the world pretty much shrugged.

Maria Corina Machado has been the one constant fighter who has never given up in over 20 years.

People who get upset about the singular they don’t understand that that was the *compromise* option. Back in my day the most popular non-binary pronoun was ze/hir/hirs, which would have taken a lot more work to adjust to than a pronoun already used in situations where someone’s gender is unknown!

.. I can see why a unified "digital ID" that ties them all together would be really useful.

I can also see why it could be abused and could be dangerous, but other countries seem to manage it without issue (Italy has SPID, for example)

Currently in the UK I have:

Passport to enter/exit
Driver license for "everyday ID" (I don't drive)
NHS number for health
Government Gateway ID for tax
NI Number for pension

and not one of these things speaks to another to say "this is the same guy"

So yeah...

There is a lot of "how dare they tell me to get an ID card" on this site from people who were lucky enough to never face daily struggles where for others proof of ID can become an existential question.

The UK manages to live in a weird space where your identity can either be proven by

either 3 pieces of mail and a debit card, none of which have a photo of you, plus the birth certificate of your entire family, or

"I assure you my name is John Smith and I am an upstanding citizen"

the post office is a public service. it doesn’t need to make money. public transit doesn’t need to make money. the library doesn’t need to make money. some things exist for the public good and we desperately need lawmakers to stop thinking about them in terms of capitalism. these are not businesses.

To me it was mind-blowing to find out that the Zach Cregger who directed this acclaimed "Weapons" film was one of The Whitest Kids U Know.

I haven't watched "Weapons" yet

I did watch "Barbarian" last night and - woaaaah - he's good.
