I think the cubic shape is the *unintentional consequence* of their very long digestive process (14+ days), required to process tough roots & grasses, extracting all moisture.

The cubes are just a fortunate happenstance of super-efficient distal colons.

WFH on my research day, working on next year's Frankenstein exhibit (Fall 2026). A previous possible title for this one was "Hot Messes in a Cold Climate" which is why I was contemplating putting together a timeline/flowchart of relationships at Villa Diodati and I'm unsure I can do it justice.
