Finishing page proofs for the book today will be fuelled by a wheat bagel with crunchy peanut butter on one half, and Nutella on the other.

100%. Think of eg people you were on a panel with recently, someone who asked a great question about your recent conference paper related to the book, someone whose article you cite a lot in the book...the big senior names are never useful as peer reviewers except maybe for books by other big names
if your press asks for names, give 6 to 8--NOT the biggest, most senior stars in your field. None of them will do it. part of the problem is that the ppl best poised are "mid-career"--i.e. have a book, tenure. TWIST: the mid-career folx, IF THEY EXIST, are so fucking overloaded I can't even tell you

It remains a great modern tragedy that a revolutionary and cheap gene editing tech w/ obv applications in medicine and ag was discovered w/ public grants at public universities 13 years ago, and they've been in a pissing contest ever since to exclusively license it for $100Ms.

do you have any idea how much you have to piss somebody off to make them change their gauge
#Finland will begin to #Russia - proof its rail network, integrate with EU train infrastructure.

The Finnish government has announced the conversion of its rail network from Russian gauge (1,524 mm) to European standard (1,435 mm).

Public land grant universities with a mission to serve the residents of their respective states are the great economic equalizers. So of course Republicans and billionaires want to destroy them. 😖

You know, the ones that have been systematically defunded over the past 2 decades, now being gutted by state laws requiring removal of any references to DEIA and the destruction of faculty governance and free speech…
Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.
One of the bragging rights that the US ed system had in the 20th century is that we didn't have education tracks. Essentially, any kid could go to a CC or state school & major in whatever they wanted to (obviously an oversimplification). I fear this aspect of the American dream is dying.

Frozen turkeys take about 1 day per 4 lbs to thaw in the fridge, which is by far the easiest method!
