What D’Angelo said Black Messiah means. It came out at the end of 2014 and it was so needed.
Article (Nolan Feeney; TIME) excerpt reads: “Black Messiah is a hell of a name for an album. It can be misunderstood. Many will think it's about religion. Some will jump to the conclusion that I'm calling myself a Black Messiah. For me, the title is about all of us. It's about the world. It's about an idea we can all aspire to. We should all aspire to be a Black Messiah.

It's about people rising up in Ferguson and in Egypt and in Occupy Wall Street and in every place where a community has had enough and decides to make change happen, D'Angelo writes in a statement about the album It's not about praising one charismatic leader but celebrating thousands of them. Not every song on this album is politically charged (though many are), but calling this album Black Messiah creates a landscape there these songs can live to the fullest. Black Messiah is not one man. It's a feeling that, collectively, we are all that leader.”

“D’Angelo’s First Album in 14 Years Is Finally Here, and It’s Surprisingly Timely” via TIME.

Seems like the best solution would be to enact a similar bill in Maryland and Virginia, or in those states localities. Problems of scale require bare minimum cooperation between local governments (most of whom seem unwilling or unable to participate in cost-incentive programs)

An hour and 11-minute long mix of nothing but D'Angelo live tracks from various shows during the Brown Sugar and Voodoo eras. It's so well done. Also downloadable.

D’Angelo. Hard to even process this one. He was one of a kind, but part of a continuum. That’s at the heart of what made him so special. #RIP

RIP to D’Angelo! One of the greatest artists of all time, and my favorite artist.

there is a lot here that stinks but the record shows that they were never arrested and the grand jury no-billed the charges. the one surviving claim is the most damning: a malicious prosecution suit against the supervising officer who fabricated evidence to get the claim to the grand jury.

6th Cir. holds that the harms to five black UK football players who were falsely accused of crimes after they were subjected to racist taunts by white frat boys at a school party do not constitute deprivations of liberty under the Fourteenth Amendment.

www.opn.ca6.uscourts.gov/opinions.pdf...
The parties dispute the third element: deprivation of liberty. According to plaintiffs, they
have been deprived of liberty because they suffered (1) a threat of imprisonment; (2) being
summoned for an arraignment and compelled to testify before a grand jury; (3) the seizure of
their personal property and information; (4) student misconduct hearings; (5) the loss of
educational and athletic opportunities; (6) reputational harm; and (7) emotional distress.
Plaintiffs have suffered greatly in general, and we are without doubt that the allegations
contained in plaintiffs’ complaints are deeply troubling and, if true, reflect extremely poorly
upon the state actors involved. But not every horrible occurrence is a constitutional violation and
plaintiffs’ suffering cannot be appropriately framed as a “deprivation of liberty” under the Fourth
Amendment as understood by this court and the Supreme Court.

lol @ “a ruthless terrorist organization (Hamas)” when they’ve been the only one of these parties to advocate for human rights in Gaza, to propose practical technocratic governance, and to be completely open about intention

The ceasefire in Gaza, now in effect, depends on the promise given by an inveterate liar and conman (Trump) to a ruthless terrorist organization (Hamas) that he will prevent another serial liar, conman, and war criminal (Netanyahu) from resuming the war:
Trump promised not to let Israel break Gaza ceasefire to get deal
Israel broke one ceasefire. Trump told the mediators he wouldn't let it happen this time.

NEW! from @nicolefroio.bsky.social: The reason governments, universities, and other public institutions across the world want to quash pro-Palestine speech—including art and music—is because they understand the danger it poses to life as we know it. Which is all the more reason to say it louder.

The weird snipe at @stevevladeck.bsky.social aside, Ilan misses the entire point that even the framers accepted the general idea of judicial oversight re: the president's deployment of military forces. Congress enacted a statutory regime. The president is bound by it. Courts have equitable powers.

This footnote to Illinois and Chicago's lawsuit against Trump is an important reminder:

* There is no Department of War or Secretary of War, which are make-believe names for the actual agencies created by Congress.

Bari Weiss is an unapologetic advocate for Israel’s genocide of Palestinians and war crimes committed by the IDF - but she’s also a poor writer and editor, blinded by pure ideology and incapable of producing a respectable product.
