This anthem is steeped in Midwestern culture, working class struggle, and the importance of folk music as preservation.When I was in elementary school, we learned about local history and I made a diorama of the shipwreck for class using clip art, Playmobil figures, sand, and real taconite pellets. I think it’s still in my parents’ basement.I hope you enjoy this field recorded rendition of one of my favorites. No stock imagery. No fake southern accent. A formative part of my mother’s childhood was having to go to the cannery to buy mislabeled items at a discount. This was 1970 in America.
It is genuinely hard for most people to grasp how poor the past was.

It’s hard to believe but there was a cartoon about an immigrant mouse and it was seen as totally fine and not controversial and not woke because it was an aspirational and nice thing about America that people could come here and find a better life
