"reign" refers to a royal authority or dominion. a king reigns over his kingdom.

"rein" is the strap used to steer a horse. you hold the reins.

so if you're trying to restrain or control something, you are "reining it in." no "g."

tbh i dont even really care if a movie is "bad" anymore. so long as it takes risks or gets a little weird with it, i can respect the effort

At least 40% of the book is just tortured descriptions of her surroundings.

To all hate-consuming coverage of Olivia Nuzzi's new book, this is perhaps the best piece of content I have seen.

I burst out laughing alone in my office at least three times.

Hard to pick a favorite "excerpt," but this is one that made me LOL:

Don't just ditch the corps that suck, drop some cash on your indie faves
A singer-songwriter friend would like people to know that while boycotting Spotify is great, it was also 16% of their income that is now cratering. So if you're cancelling Spotify, please pair that with buying music, merch, or live tickets directly from your favorite artists

All super rich guys sound the same now. It’s all “I sleep four hours a night and spend the other twenty hours a day developing a product that’s going to bring us the best widespread poverty anyone’s ever seen.”

Man, it's so great when I get to fine-tune writing by someone who knows what they're doing! I feel like I'm more likely to make really useful catches, too, when I'm not swamped with fixing a million incorrectly punctuated dialogue tags or whatever.

why is it that when someone excels in a STEM field they're seen as a genius but humanities pursuits, even when impressive, aren't given the same reverence

"83% of heavy AI users couldn’t recall key points from what they’d “written,” compared to only 10 percent of those who composed unaided." This is my argument to my students: my class will be excruciating if they don't write their own stories & critiques, bc in class they have to explain*why*.
An excellent and brutal article. I don't think the situation is quite as hopeless as some of this suggests, but the challenges are enormous. Our only chance, as ever, is to hold together: bring faculty, well-meaning administrators, and especially students together: human learning for human beings.
If ChatGPT can generate student essays, complete assignments, and even provide feedback, what remains of the educational transaction?

it is so refreshing to edit someone who can really write. varied sentence structure, impressive but appropriate vocabulary, firm command of language, seamless transitions... so many authors i see lately have "fanfic voice" and it really dampens the reading experience
