A dog’s paw print on a Roman clay tile 🐾 🐕 😍

About 2,000 years-ago, a dog made its mark for ‘pawsterity’ when it wandered across the wet tile laid out to dry before firing.

My photo shows a hand-sized, jagged, fragment of Roman red clay tile. There is an impression of a dog’s paw pressed into the clay. The imprint shows four toe pads arranged in an arc above a central pad. Above each toe imprint there is a small indent made by the dog’s claws. The imprint was made when the paw pressed into soft clay when the clay tile was laid out in the yard before firing. The tile fragment is set against a blue display case background. Excavated at Richborough Roman fort. My photo was taken in 2020.

No surprise the Trump NIH director doesn’t understand how science works—doesn’t get NIH has been *the* world-historic leader in innovation.

After all, he’s never actually done any science.
Even before his rightwing pundit career 2020-25, he spent his time with economists, not scientists.

The NIH director told attendees the NIH doesn't do enough innovative research.

“What puts lives at risk is doing research that’s incremental,” Bhattacharya said. “All it does is advance the careers of the researchers that do it. It results in publications that don’t get used and aren’t replicable.”

I am endlessly fascinated by the continual growth of the gap between civil society leadership eagerly embracing Trump and everyone else, by wide margins, doing the opposite. You couldn’t pick a better example of elite alienation from the rest of society in a textbook, it’s so stark.

#PPOD: A vast cavity on the Red Planet looks back at ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) with an icy stare. The crater is located in Utopia Planitia, the largest known impact basin in the Solar System, with a diameter of roughly 3,300 km, or twice the size of Earth’s Sahara Desert from north to south. 🧪
A smooth sided crater takes up the majority of this image, taken from space, of the surface of Mars. Ejecta from the impact can be seen as lighter colored dust around the rim of the crater and even in some smaller craters to the left and below the main one. Dark streaks down the inside cliff walls could be evidence of water ice under the surface. The bottom of the crater seems to be almost flat.

The agents asked no questions and showed no identification before taking one man away, whose wife and child were inside at the time, the pastor said. They attempted to grab others, too. "Right now, everybody is scared. Everybody," he said. "One of these guys with immigration, he say he was going to arrest one of the other guys in the church. He pushed him." The Epstein revelations of the past few months suggest that these conspiracies actually do represent reality in some way—plainly speaking, some of the most powerful people in the world were communicating with one another through the kingpin of an alleged child-sex-trafficking operation. But the emails also prove that the truth is dumber than fiction. These global elites are far from organized and hyper-competent—it feels like how Veep would have treated QAnon. The elites don’t message with sex pests using code words; they openly muse about having fun with girls at “Hawaiian Tropic” parties. That reading these emails feels surreal makes sense—they shatter the myth of genius and merit that the ruling class tries carefully and spends exorbitantly to cultivate, and they affirm the worst suspicions of the conspiracy-minded. As more revelations are made public, it may feel like the conspiracy theorists have won. But they’ve been wrong as well. Cabal is too flattering a word for this crowd of cosplaying, hunt-and-peck email addicts. Conspiracy theories are a flawed tool meant to help make sense of a nonsensical world. The truth is darker: You don’t need an elaborate master plan to dodge accountability when everyone’s all too willing to simply look the other way.
