"Worse, the reason the pitch had been appealing to me to begin with was likely because a large language model somewhere was remixing my own prompt asking for stories where 'health and money collide,' flattering me by sending me back what I wanted to hear."
Fascinating read on how a suspicious pitch highlighted a growing problem in freelance journalism: A flood of generative AI that even prestige publications don't catch, complete with fabricated quotes, from scammers who see opportunity in a field so many real humans are struggling to survive in.
Investigating a Possible Scammer in Journalism’s AI Era | The Local
A suspicious pitch from a freelancer led editor Nicholas Hune-Brown to dig into their past work. By the end, four publications, including The Guardian and Dwell, had removed articles from their sites.

Super Mario Bros.-ass flower (complimentary)
WE FOUND IT! We trekked day and night through tiger-patrolled Sumatran rainforests accessible only under permit for this: Rafflesia hasseltii. Few people have ever seen this flower, and we watched it open by night. Magic.

"Through a representative, [Henry] Rollins 'declined with great enthusiasm' to an interview request for this article."
Greg Ginn hadn't done an interview in 13 years when I reached out. I figured he would say no, if he said anything at all. But after enlisting three Gen Z musicians to be in Black Flag with him, he decided it was time to talk. For @nytimes.com:

Sadly, I raised my hand to our Georgetown townhouse’s central heating vent. Once again, I was not the note’s intended recipient.

Which reminds me of my favorite aggrieved freelancer story of all time: In the late '90s, when a writer set up a tent in the lobby of Bob Guccione's Gear magazine and refused to leave until his long overdue invoice was paid. It worked! Hero!
I'd freekin' show up in person!!
Question: If you submitted a timely, assigned piece to an editor at [very prestigious publication] and they didn't acknowledge receipt/respond to your followup emails at all for 3 weeks, would you call them on the phone? Added context: You don't have their # and have never spoken to them the phone?
